Mangalore, Jun 19: The entire stretch of road from Fr Muller Hospital up to Nandigudda circle is lined up with huge trees. Some of them more than a century old. The trees not only provide shade for the pedestrians but also are home to a variety of fauna besides helping to conservation of soil and water:
But of recent it has been brought to the notice that the city Corporation is thinking of widening the present road and turn it into a four lane. However, the need and necessity for widening this already-wide-enough road must be made public and there should be a debate on the subject before any such idea is implemented.
If the debate throws up a conclusion for widening, then, it should be done without axing the trees. Alternatively the trees can be relocated since the necessary technology is available and it has been and is being practiced all over the country and the world.
One should not forget the dire warning about global warming and environment degradation that is taking place. Last week “World Environment Day” was observed. In this scenario, one must think whether he/she should contribute towards reducing global warming or the opposite by cutting trees indiscriminately.
