Swaraj meets GCC ministers, pushes India-GCC Free Trade Agreement

New York, Oct 1 (IANS): India continued its mission to cement ties with the Arab world as External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj held talks with her counterparts from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) whose nations she said were "an extended part of our neighbourhood".

At the meeting here on Wednesday, Swaraj called for the early finalisation of the India-Gulf Cooperation Council Free Trade Agreement and operationalising the India-GCC Framework Agreement.

Foreign ministers of Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates and Oman along with GCC Secretary General Rashid Al Zayani attended the 9th ministerial-level meeting.

Briefing reporters, External Affairs Ministry Spokesman Vikas Swarup said that Swaraj invited the GCC nations to participate in the "Make in India" campaign, in particular the Mumbai-Delhi industrial corridors.

She also called for turning the buyer-seller relationship in the energy sector into a "mutually beneficial investment partnership" that involves both upstream and downstream operations.

Security issues and the threat posed by terrorism also figured in the discussions. She urged them to work for an early conclusion of the Comprehensive International Convention on Terrorism.

The GCC is India's largest trading partner with $137.7 billion trade in 2014-15, up from 5.5 billion in 2001. More than 50 percent of India's oil and gas come from the GCC countries that host 7 million Indian nationals.

It is interesting note that some commentators are opposing for the sake of opposing.
    1. Indian FM talks to GCC foreign ministers for investment - what is wrong with that?
    2. BJP had not opposed FDI per se, it opposed FDI in retail sector. Has this policy changed by them? I can't find any evidence.
    3. The Government of India is seeking foreign investments mainly in infrastructure, which requires big funding. Is there anything wrong in that?
    4. Indian PM is doing an excellent marketing job. Don't you agree? Ok - we have to wait for the delivery.
5.Interestingly Kejriwal says "Make India". To "make India" you need money.
    6. Is "Make In India" is the essence of Swaraj (not Sushma Swaraj) movement?
Make fun of Sush Maa or Radhe Maa. But don't belittle Indian Government please.

Bhandarkar, First of all you need to respect the minister by addressing Sushmaji. secondly you are biased on your approch. No UPA foreign minister has done the work which is done by Sushmaji. No UPA minister has close relation with all the countries like Sushmaji done. In regard to corruption it is game of Congress to malign Sushmaji and Modjiji and nothing else. No proof of her invovement in any kind of corruption. It is false alegation. Why UPA ministers have not put case on her. Let them pull her to court. Just because some congi media reported this issue you are binding on it.
Just on media report you cannot label her corrupt. No UPA minister resigned unless it has proved and pressurized by opposition and media. Other wise they were sticking to their chairs. If all the corrupt were asked to resign in UPA they no minister would have in UPA when they ended their term. Great work done by Sushmaji and expect her to continue doing her best job.

Think the Opposition must be firm on this.
In UPA times there was corruption no doubt. However, when caught they were made to resign.
Let us be impartial and good citizens without any political leanings.it is our 'leanings' that make these kind of politicians strong.

This India - GCC Free Trade Agreement will strengthen India's stand amongst GCC countries & bi-lateral trade will improve. India stands to benefit!

This would also create lot of job opportunities, both in India & GCC, who always rank Indians better than other employees... thereby benefiting Gulf job seekers from Coastal districts, Kerala etc..

Win win for both! Jai Hind

Good signal towards further expansion in future Trade, Energy & Investment opportunities.
Also, take a firm step in terrorist related issues. Not only verbal support.
From our various export oriented items Beef should be scraped as it has become a National issue. If people are banned to eat Beef, even export also should be banned. There should not be double standards one related to gain foreign income other related to sentiments.
You can make a proposal with Modi in this respect.

    Jeevan,

BJP Couldn't function well even while in opposition - why did they let the case go upto UN Tribunal ? Don't you see that India is asked to the case now ! If your Foreign Ministry has any potential, let them take up the matter allover again. What Feku is doing during all his trips to the US ? Well, if you say a MP in UPA government did more than a Foreign Minister can now do, I have no words !

As of Saudi Ambassador's case, there isn't any MP now stopping Indian Government from proceeding - is there ? So, why not function ? Or, aren't Indians not interested since the victims are from Nepal ? I have reasons believe - the nation refused to call itself a Hindu country and abide by India's dictation - you see ?
