Indeed it is a national malaise. So Mangalore, quite understandably, should not lag behind.

Lack of civic sense, utter neglect of garbage management, unplanned and unaesthetic roads and structures... the list is long.

The situation is all the more paradoxical when Dakshina Kannada is being flaunted as a district of intelligent people, cradle of educational institutions and healthcare and the like, and Mangalore is tipped to be the Silicon City-in-the-making, next only to Bangalore.

A trip around the city is a galling experience. The posh Mahatma Gandhi Road with state-of-the-art shopping malls may give a comforting picture. But these photos from other downtown centres like Balmatta and Dr Ambedkar Circle,  clicked as recently as on Tuesday, July 31, 2007 may not do justice to the image of Mangalore, literally meaning the City of Felicity, as something to write home about.

Non-existent footpaths, open gutters, incomplete road works resulting in muddy surface on tarmac roads - this is the legacy our city administration has left us with. When the aspiring City Fathers come at our doors to seek votes, it is the right opportunity to pull them up.

True, we do not have an elected body at our city administration. It is under the ex-officio administrator, the young and energetic deputy commissioner, M Maheshwar Rao, who can do things to see our city in a better shape.

Are we so thick-skinned and lethargic as not to protest against such callous handling of the state of affairs? Are we so stoic and patient in taking any kind of beating?

Could we not have some people with foresight and vision and definite plans for the future as our City Fathers?

Some opportunity for introspection.

Thought provoking article. A few days ago, I happened to see a new steel bin been installed only to see a person throwing the garbage right outside it when the bin was over there. Why not our citizens wake up.

if it goes this way, not only Mangalore but every city and village is going to become Garbage dumps. Civic sense has to be increased, for which slogan shouting and public speeches alone are not sufficient, stringent measures like impose fines and those who do not pay have to sit in jails for atleast one day. People who stay inthe flats often throw their garbage from their flats as walking towards the nearest garbage dumping place is frustrating , next people who pull Garbage out of these dumps to collect empty Milk pouches to make their living .

All these need to be looked into to make Mangalore Garbage free. Every one knows but who will do it. Governimng members are busy with lots of their problems

The garbage in the pictures may be monsoon related. Why point a finger at the DC and Mayor. I am a senior citizen, come to live in Mangalore to find my roots. Intelligent people have left to go to other cities and countries. If Eric Coelho plans to form a committee, I would like to join in improving the situation, even ten percent.

Eric Coelho is talking about bad footpaths, garbage accumulation, open drainage, mosquito menace and many other issues, the new one being daylight killings in the past week of a 35 year old lady and 55 year old man.

As for Saleem, it is easy ask people to wake up, living in Abu Dhabi.  Rich, middleclass, poor, intellectual, retired, and who care for Mangalore can form a committee to save the good name of the city.

Mangalore has been a city of Intellectuals not for the development of Mangalore but to carry this intellectuality to other Cities or Countries. Garbage Accumulation, Bad Footpaths, Open Drainage, Mosquito Menace and Many other issues is been going on for many many years.

Nobody wants to move forward and initiate improvements in Mangalore. If a Certain group of Intellectuals form a Committee wherein all people rich, middle class and poor come to them on various issues and these are addressed to all the Govt Dept corruption can be brought to the lowest level.

Of course this work can be done for a nominal fee than paying hefty amounts as bribes to the Govt. Servants who only want to build or increase their assets manifold. Let the Intellectuals think it over and form a Committee and even retired people can be a part of this.
