Mumbai schoolboy dies while taking selfie atop train

Mumbai, Nov 4 (IANS): A 14-year old schoolboy, who was trying to take a selfie on his cellphone atop a stationary train wagon, was electrocuted and died a few hours later on Tuesday evening, officials said.

The incident happened at Nahur station yard on the Central Railway when the victim, Sahil C. Eshwarkar allegedly climbed atop a goods train wagon parked there ostensibly to click a selfie.

He accidentally came in contact with the powerful 25,000 volts overhead electrical wires and was electrocuted, suffering 80 percent burns.

He was rushed to the Rajawadi Hospital nearby where he was declared dead on admission. The police have registered a case of accidental death.

A Class IXth student of the St. Francis Xaviers High School, Sahil was accompanied by some friends who had gone to try out a new mobile phone gifted by his father only two days ago.

This is the second such incident of teenagers getting killed while clicking extreme selfies rashly in the city this year.

In January this year, a 16-year old collegian Ganesh Kumkumwati met a similar fate after attempting to click a selfie atop a train wagon in Jogeshwari and touching the powerful 25,000 volt overhead wire.

very scary situation. it's like no choice for parents. if you buy these stuffs to your kids, you are bound to see such days where they create problems. if you don't get them these stuffs, they blame us because all others around him are having those. My own son comes home and says, all my friends have ipod with them, mobile with them... and questions me why not he ? If it's a unanimous decision by all parents, then it may work like we all stop giving them. or else... no idea what should be the response when they come with such demands.....

    Dear Kiran,

The solution is very simple. Ban the Mobile phone in schools and Junior colleges. Because these boys and girls are not matured enough to use mobile phones. In Mangalore one of the prestigious college has banned the mobile phone and charges fine of IRS. 10,000 if they found mobile with any of the students in college/ school premises. The decision has been taken after one girl committed suicide 2 years ago, due to face book photo/ comments. The school/ college also banned the 2 wheelers driven by teenagers. The college got toppers in state for many years now.

Father's gift of cell phone to a son is for communicating but resulted in eliminating himself. What a cruel fate. RIP Sahil.
God save our youngsters from the madness of dangerous selfies.
