Mangalore, Aug 15: "The second phase of the development work of Mangalore International Airport at Bajpe near here at total cost of Rs 200 crore will commence shortly and without delay," announced district-in-charge minister B Nagaraj Shetty.

He was addressing the gathering during the 60th Independence Day celebrations programme organized by district administration at Nehru Maidan here on Wednesday August 15 morning

He further said that all efforts will be put in by the government in implementing the much-awaited Mangalore-Bangalore railway after meeting the union railway minister and concerned officials as early as possible. "I feel proud to announce a few developmental programmes for the district on this auspicious occasion of 60th Independence Day celebrations of our country.  Taking into consideration the fact that our law and order problem has to be strengthened, we have planned to open a hi-tech police academy school at Kudremukh.  There is also a proposal to use the existing pipeline between the Kudremukh and Mangalore (which was earlier used for transporting iron ore) for drinking water supply to Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts," he added.

Speaking about the rain fury in the district he said that this year a total of 1,214 houses have been damaged while 10 persons have been killed owing to incessant rains.  The total loss has been estimated at Rs 51 crore and the state as well as the central government have been made aware of this, he informed.

Shiradi Ghat road which is a prime link between the city and Bangalore, but which is in a very bad state right now would be developed soon.  The work will begin as soon as the monsoon gets over. A total of Rs 30 crore has been allotted to this project.  "On the other hand, the long-awaited request of having another vented dam at Thumbe to fulfill the needs of the district will soon be met since Rs 40 crore has been sanctioned in principal for the project by the state government,” he added.

He also said that the peadiatric hospital built by Infosys which has recently been handed over to the district administration will start functioning from November 14, 2007.

Earlier the day started with the minister hoisting the tri-coloured National Flag at the Nehru Maidan in the presence of distinguished guests.

Rafter 30, an indigenous helicopter designed by Ratnakar Nayak, an aero-modelling teacher was the special attraction of the day.  The chopper with .39 horse-power was the centre point to attraction on the day.

The Independence Day parade by Reserve Police, District Armed Reserve (DAR) police, Civil, Traffic, Coast Guards, Home Guards, NCC, Scouts, Guides, Bharat Seva Dal and Police Band too enthralled the gathering.  The parade was led by Nanjudappa.

The administration felicitated 9 persons on the occasion. K Ashok of Moodbidri (Home Guards), Taranath Putran of Panambur (Rescued eight men in over flooded Nandini River), Tulasi Shettigarthi of Kavoor (Skilled cotton weaver), Vysaraya Shettigar of Sasihitlu of Heleangady (Skilled cotton weaver), Shankar Shettigar (skilled cotton weaver), Veena M Nayak who died in Misoram border, U Vasanthi, wife of Army Jawan Uday Kumar.  However, Lt Col John Serrao, father of Kevin Serrao who had to receive the honour could not make it to the programme.
