Mangalore Aug 19: A report was submitted in Kochi recently to the principal officer MMD recently by the Mercantile Marine Department (MMD), which is investigating the causes of the shipwreck of Eritrean registered vessel M V DenDen on June 23 near Tannirubhavi coast here.

A copy of the final 10-page report was submitted to the International Maritme Organisa tion (IMO) in Geneva. The duly completed report had expert inputs from Mumbai-based captain Johari (Engineering), captain Rao and captain Vaswani from New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT). The final report thus submitted conclusively rules out any foul play in ‘BV’ class vessel carrying furnace slug cargo.

The report gives a vivid step by step account of DK district’s first shipwreck from the time the vessel left from New Mangalore Port on June 20. Moreover as evidence it has recorded all the statements of the surviving 21 crew members, including the seasoned captain Abraham Kwaw. The report has also recorded the statements of the local workshop which was contacted for the availibility of a spare part and shipping agents. In all, total of 17 vessels, including MV DenDen had sunk off the Indian coast this monsoon, revealed the said report.

Further the report pointed at inherent technical faults within the ships as the major reason for all shipwrecks. It also laid special emphasis on having skilled staff and clockwork precision maintenance of ships, as a possible solution to the problem. Principal officer in MMD Cochin would submit a report to Director General of Shipping in Mumbai, informed sources in MMD.

The recommendations made in the report and the actions initiated thereof, is understood to be highlighted in MMD’s official website. IMO also would carry out the recommendations on its website for benefit of other ships, stated informd sources.
