Mangalore, Sep 6: As ill-fated Chang Le Men ship was sinking at Tannirbavi, life of several poor fruit, vegetable and flower vendors was sinking owing to the demotion drive by MCC at in the city on Thursday September 6 evening.

The operation was started around 5 pm. The civic authorities demolished the petty shops and seized about half a truck load of fruits, vegetables and flowers from the vendors. Hence, about 50 vendors lost their shops and started cursing the officials.

The operation was carried out near Lady Goschen Hospital, Central Market, State Bank and Town Hall.

“This operation will continue in the coming days in other parts of the city oo,” said Praveen Chandra Karkera, assistant revenue officer (ARO) to ‘daijiworld.com.’

When asked about the existence of illegal buildings in the city, Praveen Chandra Karkera said that, this matter lies with Town Planning officers. The process of identifying the illegal buildings is underway. Definitely, they would be demolished in the coming days, he assured.

This is absolutely wrong what’s happening in Mangalore. For all the modernization going on, why are these poor vendors being pushed around? Is MCC clearing the way for Reliance Retail Stores to step in? Then we definitely need another person like Mayawati in Mangalore - Kudos to what she did for Uttar Pradesh !!!

Where is our Chief Minister? and for anyone out there who thinks this is the road to take to clean up Mangalore - think of yourself in these poor people's shoes, maybe you would see why this is inhuman!!!

It is too much. I don't agree with what MCC is doing and specially their rude bevaviour with these poor vendors, specially with those old ladies. Look at the roads, illegal constructions/buildings and garbage on the road try to solve such problems first.

What about the illegal shops that the big builders have built ? what about them ? I heard recently that those will be "regularised". why so ? why liniency for the big thieves, and a crusade against the small harmless fries ? so many buildings with no parking in the basement which are more serious offence than the harmless vendors on the streetside. What about the corrupt city corporation officials who might have collaborated with the builders to give a NOC without necessary building norms adhered ?

What is done is not at all right, to see old women being driven out and forcefully taking their items is a very sad situation to see. They should have been informed of this much earlier instead of just coming suddenly and being driven out. If we are working for progress let us work in a right manner but not in this way.

What is MCC going to do with the stuff that they took away? They should warn the vendors well in advance. It looks MCC officials or thier lieutenent's haven't got the hafta paid by these poor street vendors. Its the same flowers that every person buys for many occasions, the vegetables and other stuff. How pathetic it is?

Its sad to see folks who for generations are part of the ethos of the city, selling their stuff on market road, being driven out. These are hard working folk who are doing it to earn a living. Where do these people go from here.

On the other hand the mafia seems to be occupying any land they want at will and putting up these nasty buildings on every square inch of vacant land. I would not be surprised if the land vacated by these poor folk would result in someone wealthy getting wealthier.

If we do not raise our voice what is going on, 30 years down we would be left with a disfigured place, quite different from the one we call home today.

What a cruel show !!! I am in favor of demolition of all illegal structures, including the small and petty shops. However, the demolition of these foot-path bucket shops of the meek and poor (and the demolition of their livelihood) should have happened only after the complete and total demolition of all illegal structures and encroachment of the mighty and the rich.

Alas, that will never happen in Mangalore as the nexus of babus and the nethas (thieves and criminals) will then loose their loot which runs into 10 to 20 times their monthly salary, month after month. Prostitutes are more principled and have superior morals than these thieves and criminal (officials and politicians).

The photographs showing the merchandise of the old ladies being taken away was touching, heart-melting and deeply disturbing. What was the worth of what they were selling to earn their daily bread, Rupees 500 ?? Well, the mighty and well connected have encroached prime government land (in other words, land belonging to people, all of us, collectively) and that encroached property might be worth Rupees 500 crores !!! What a cruel show !!!

This is heartbreaking. Instead of or before demolishing and destroying whatever little livelihood these traders had, why couldn't the MCC provide them with a space, somewhere central like a little corner of the Nehru Maidan, for a small acorn fee, for trading?

There should be strict time limit, eg, 7am to 3pm daily & when they leave the place should be left completely empty, clean & litter free as if they've never been there. That way these traders can earn their living & MCC will have their revenue, small it may be! Can someone put this notion to the MCC?

The same MCC is going to conduct a drive to regularise illegal constructions in multi-storeyed buildings that violate National Building Code from 15 th September.-it is reported. The balance of MCC justice seem to tilt in favour of big violators!!

I love Mangalore and Mangaloreans. yes, we have to learn to be systematic like first arrange alternate/organised/ affordable set up for the small vendors, then think of clean up of the cramped areas.

Mangalore, needs to be more organised to meet the challenges of the future or cancel everything new to go back to old days. are we ready for this, we have to have a balance of heart and mind in all things. The progress in Mangalore has always been at a snail pace, let it not be dead.

Mr.DC look at the roads in Mangalore, if you are so concerned about infrastucture work on that , look at the city Bus service they stop the bus where ever they feel like, look at the garbage on the road try to solve such problems first.

This is not the way of working. what you are doing is not right. Give them place to do their business and tell them to move. If u go to central market poor fellows dont have proper toilet. . I feel really bad for tis poor vendors.

Very sad to see plight of poor vendors. Instead of providing them with proper place, MCC is hitting hard to their source of bread/butter. Mangalore has many big buildings (by rich people) which violated norms and encroached public property.

Why cant MCC go after those big fish instead of harrasing poor people???? OR The drive is just because poor vendors did not pay HAWALA to the officials?

Sad to see how the MCC after the expiry of the term of the elected council is resorting to cruel & rude action against poor & petty vendors who eak out a living from their small business. Instead of regularising this activity by setting some guidelines and issuing licences for a small fee so that these poor people can carry on their business , the arrogant and corrupt officials of the MCC are simply destroying whatever little merchandise these vendors have acquired to earn their daily meagre income.

One wonders under whose orders these unnecessary drives are conducted and towards what objective? It appears some monster in the MCC is targetting these poor vendors or a proxy politician seems to be behind this barbaric action.Instead of concentrating on repairing the roads in the entire city which are in such a pathetic and hopeless condition despite collecting huge revenue in the form of life time tax for vehicles, resources are wasted in these stupid drives which help none and only inflict hardship on the meek and aged vendors.

If some big business house or MNCs' were to set shop flouting all norms and encroachments on public property, these shameless officials will run behind them to collect bribes and lock their boots and pretend to be blind to such illegal acts.Just because these hapless creatures can't afford to grease the palms of the corrupt revenue officials they have to bear the brunt in the guise of unauthorised trade.

When no mercy is shown certainly the curse of these poor people will haunt the officials and also those who are behind these drives either directly or indirectly!!They should think twice before resorting to such action again.Only God has to show mercy to them and protect them from the onslaught of the demons in the MCC.

It is sad to see the way  MCC is behaving. Do what ever you have to in peaceful manner. Inform the petty shop owners and give them time to carry their own load, instead of confiscating their property and spoiling it.
