Water train reaches Latur after 18 hr journey

Mumbai, Apr 12 (PTI): A special train carrying around five lakh litres of water for parched Latur in Marathwada region, which is battling the worst drought ever, reached the destination after 18 hours this morning.

The 'water train' with 10 wagons carrying water for Latur had left from Miraj in western Maharashtra at around 11 am yesterday and reached Latur at 5 am today, taking 18 hours to traverse a distance of around 350 kilometres.

"The first batch of ten wagons, each with a capacity of around 50,000 litres, were filled with water at Miraj railway station in Sangli district," said Chief spokesperson of Central Railway Narendra Patil.

The district administration has acquired a huge well located near Latur railway station to store the water which will then be supplied to Latur town. On April 8, the train had left from Kota workshop for Miraj in Pune division. The second train consisting of 50 wagons is expected to be ready for water loading around April 15, a Railway official said earlier.

"As per instructions from the Ministry of Railways, Kota workshop received two goods trains consisting of 50 tank wagons each for deployment in drought-affected areas of Latur during the summer season and the trips of the trains will be arranged as per the requirement," he said. The carrying capacity of these wagons is 54,000 litres of waters per wagon.

BJP on Tuesday took strong objection to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's move to send 10 lakh liters of water per day to Latur from Delhi for next two months, wondering how the government can think of such a proposal when the city itself was grappling with water scarcity.

The Centre had sanctioned Rs 3,500 crore for helping the distressed farmers in Maharashtra, while the state allocated Rs 2,500 crore.Of this, Rs 14.34 crore has been disbursed so far.
It shows lack of water management and failure of Minister of Water Resources of India.

To convert sea water into potable water (desalination) it needs lots of energy (heat) in the form of gas or fuel or electricity/Solar energy etc. which are already in short supply in India. Sea water distillation is cheap in the gulf because of availability of cheap gas and oil. Most feasible way of saving water which is flowing into the sea from rivers, store it and transport to the needy droughts effected areas. In India bureaucratic hurdles or political wrangle is more than what actually needs to be achieved.

18 hours and we are talking about super fast train. It should fly no way it can travel with the same tracks.

On the other hand we have to keep the water transportation as a secret mission, else some docits will loot the water and it will be ache din for docoits.
