Udupi, May 30: In an ordinary meeting of Udupi Municipal Council (UMC) held on May 30, ruling party corporator Ramesh said that the news that water with worms was supplied to a Schedule Caste (SC) colony is far from truth and urged for action against social activist Nityananda Olakadu for allegedly spreading false rumours.
Reacting to it, opposition party corporator Yashpal Suvarna opposed the move saying that Nityananda Olakadu has indulged in pro- society work including free water after being the member in the corporation for five years.
Corporation official Manjunathayya said that water with worms is not supplied to SC Colony. “The Almighty does not like discrimination in water and air. Only clean water is supplied to all the wards. The water is lifted from 14 identified wells and provided to the wards,” he said.
“Some people including apartment owners have kept water bills worth lacs of rupees unpaid. Collect the charges immediately or disconnect the water supply” urged member Ramesh Kanchan.
The official assured that the supply will be stopped within the next fifteen days.
To the allegation that water is not being supplied through tankers in corporation limits even after ten days, the official said that the problem prevailed during the opposition party rule also. The meeting turned noisy after the allegation.
The members asked to avoid the photos of MLAs and council president in the banners with regard to distribution of water. When the opposition party members urged to put minister's photo instead, the ruling party members said that Rs 1 crore grant was received only after the efforts of MLA. Council president Meenakshi asked to remove her picture if it is difficult for the opposition to see it. On the whole, discussions on water took several hours.
