Mangaluru: Thumbay dam overflows - gates opened to release water

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jun 2: After the district received heavy rains on Tuesday May 31, there was sudden increase in the inflow of water into Thumbay vented dam which supplies water to the city. As the water level touched the brim, gates were opened to release water into the sea on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

Thumbay dam has a height of 13 feet, and water level had crossed 11 feet. As the officials opened 134 gates at the higher altitude immediately, water did not overflow from the dam. Although further rain was experienced on Wednesday, water level was controlled at around ten feet by opening 70 gates. Officials said that if inflow increases, all the gates would be opened to make sure that sand does not get accumulated at the dam.

At the same time, water has also been stored at AMR dam where water level is maintained by opening gates in tune with inflow of water.

At the same time, it will take a few more days for the water level to rise at the dam at Baje built across River Swarna that caters to the requirement of Udupi, it is gathered. Although it has rained in Karkala, it takes time for the water to reach Baje. At present, tankers continue to meet demand for water in several wards. Officials said that the current level at Baje will be sufficient for eight days.

During April / May 2015 the Govt should have dredged / excavated the sand from the dam by 8-10 feet. This would have helped in storage of more water in April / May 2016. The excavated sand could have been used for infrastructure purposes. It could have been sent by train to Mysore / Bangalore too. I suppose there is no study or master plan for this. Our politicians are only abusing each other and playing dirty games. Poojary is also one of them. The Thumbe dam was built when Poojary was the MP from Mangalore.

Thumbe dam overflow due to slit or water? Mangalore has not seen such torrential rain this season. Hope if rain stopped water will not dry up in the river. Baje dam at Udupi also should be made slit free to accommodate enough water for dry season.

    Juliana,

    You are absolutely right!
Look at any dams in India, it is only silt that makes them over flow even with the slightest rainfall which is the present situation in Thumbay, or what have you!

In the absence of rains in coming days, situation will return to zero.

I wonder why people praising themselves for this temporary success without doing any thing to solve the issue on permanent basis.

I will not be surprised if media will attribute water overflows in all reservoirs in K'taka, to some useless leaders etc.

If increased further thousands of acres of land in the surrounding area would be under water, who will agree. Government should think over it and come to fair solution.

It can be increased to any height my friend...but when you increase height reservoir area increases and lot of land around to be vacated / acquired...which is not easy in India... I hope understand why MCC is not able to increase the dam height even though there is water shortages

I can't believe it, dam is full with just 2 days of rainfall. The earlier report by some agency was 157% excess rainfall in Dakshina Kannada in May when there was hardly any rainfall. This type of manufactured report is by the For Yettinahole lobby to fool the people.
