Mangaluru Jun 3: Torrential rain which lashed the city on Thursday June 2 night created lot of problems for the people. As the drains near Rao and Rao Circle located in the vicinity of State Bank in the city remain choked, rainwater directly flooded the roads in the area. Rainwater also entered shops inside the old fish market located in front of the circle.
On Friday morning, people who routinely conduct their business here were seen cursing the city corporation for its negligence that has created a crisis-like situation for them..
The work of constructing a new drain had begun about one and half month back at Rao and Rao Circle. The road was dug to a depth of six feet, and the mud so extracted was heaped by the roadside. The heaps of mud were creating lot of problems for the people, who as usual fell silent after cursing the city corporation. The city corporation turned a deaf ear to all these criticisms. Not only that, they also suspended work on lhe drain halfway through its execution.
Due to heavy rain, the mud which was heaped by the roadside has flown back into the drain with rainwater and blocked it. This has forced rainwater to directly flow on the road and enter buildings located by the roadsides.
People conducting business in the area handed over a petition to the commissioner and officials at the city corporation on Friday, explaining to them the problems faced because of haphazard working stated above. These businessmen have noted that lack of people-friendly approach on the part of the city corporation has resulted in chaos. They have warned of holding protest in front of the city corporation office if the officials fail to wake up to the problem and take up and complete the pending work without further delay.
