Mangaluru, Jun 4: MSNM (Manel Srinivas Nayak Memorial) Institute of PG Management Studies on behalf of Manel Srinivas Nayak Knowledge Series organized a 'Talk on Coffee and the Professional Opportunities provided by the bean' here on Saturday, June 4.
Speaking on this occasion, Sunalini N Menon CEO, Coffee Labs India (P) and Independent director in the board of TATA Coffee Ltd said, “For coffee, you need large number of ingredients. The plant material, cultivation practises, the processing technology, processing, blending brewing and marketing. Arabica and Robusta are the two species of coffee. And what we drink today is the blend of Arabica and Robusta.”
“In Karnataka we have third element that is ‘cheppari’. The Arabica is grown in Brazil, the largest producer of coffee. Columbia is the second largest producer of coffee. India is the 6th largest producer of coffee. Vietnam is the largest producer of Robusta coffee. The difference between these two types is that Arabica gives you flavour. Robusta is different from Arabica. We treat both coffees equally. processing technique for Robusta is different from Arabica,” she said.
Speaking on the Coffee Board, she said, “Coffee board is only body started in 1948. The aim of Coffee Board is not only to sell the coffee but also reach to farmers depending on quantity and quality of coffee. Apart from this, coffee board does research on coffee.”
“In India, coffee grows at medium to high altitude area. In India, we can grow coffee in 4800 to 5000 feet altitude. India is a tropical country with lots of disease and ours is not coffee growing country but tea growing country. Growers in India have done marvellous job by fighting against pest and disease. We can see the North Eastern states growing coffee in India. We grow coffee under the shade and it is also great selling point. We have and farmers practise the diversified pattern of cultivation,” she added.
She also briefed about coffee growing conditions, processing, brewing and research and development on the occasion.
