Bhatkal, Jun 5: Tension spread in the town on Saturday June 4 after some miscreants were found to have abandoned severed skull of a cow in a Nagabana dedicated to the serpent god, reverred by Hindus as holy.
As usual, the family of Digambar Bhavanishankar Shet residing at Hanuman Nagar here had lighted the lamp at their Nagabana on Friday night. But some people who visited the spot on Saturday morning to pay obeisance found that the skull of a cow covered in plastic sheet had been tossed there. Hundreds of people gathered at the Nagabana thereafter.
The people have urged the police to find out people behind repeated efforts to disrupt peace and to punish them. It is suspected that someone who came in a motor bike would have parked their vehicle a little distance away before throwing the cow head and returning.
District superintendent of police, Vamsi Krishna, who visited the spot, said that the police have as yet no clue about the culprits behind this act. He added that detailed investigation would have to be conducted as the incident happened after midnight, duly confirming that a case has been registered and investigation launched.
IGP Western Range, Arun Chakravarthy who visited Bhatkal on Saturday said that the police will find the culprits very soon. "People do not want any unrest based on such incidents. They want peace. Our duty is to maintain law and order so that there is peace in society. Police will make all efforts to arrest the culprits at the soonest."
