Desilt Ganga to prevent floods: CPI-M

New Delhi, Aug 26 (IANS): The CPI-M on Friday urged the central government to desilt the Ganga river which it said was causing floods every year.

In the case of the Bihar foods, the damage could have been controlled had the release of water from the Bansagar dam been managed better, the Communist Party of India-Marxist said.

The CPI-M expressed concern at the flood devastation in Bihar, where it said 135 people had been killed and 35 lakh affected in 12 districts.

Urging the Bihar government to provide immediate relief and adequate compensation for those who have lost almost everything, it said there were widespread complaints about the woefully inadequate relief works.
