Mangaluru, Sep 2: For the benefit of the trade & industry, officers and other stakeholders and to sensitize about the proposed model law and procedures, the National Academy of Customs, Excise & Narcotics (NACEN), Bengaluru in association with the Commissionerates of Central Excise, Service Tax and Customs conducted a workshop on Goods & Services Tax (GST) on Friday September 2 at the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) Auditorium, ICAI Bhavan, Padil, Mangaluru.
The GST regime which is on the way to being implemented will mark a paradigm shift in the manner of levy and collection of indirect taxes in the country and is a watershed moment in the annals of tax reform.
Dr M Subramanyam, Commissioner of Central Excise & Service Tax, Mangaluru, welcomed the gathering and highlighted the proposed tax reform as a real game changer for expanding tax base, mobilise resources and also for minimising regional disparities since it enables predominantly consumer states to raise resources for developmental activities.
RB Tiwari, chief Commissioner of Customs, Bengaluru Zone, Bengaluru in his inaugural address expressed that the country is on the threshold of change which is momentous and assured all stakeholders that all concerns of trade and industry will be addressed to ensure smooth transition.
In his keynote address, S Rajkumar, the chief Commissioner of Central Excise, Mysuru Zone stressed that the country has witnessed the biggest tax reforms of independent India; that a new era of indirect taxation was around the corner and that the officers are capable of handling it effectively.
M Vinod Kumar, chief Commissioner of Central Excise & Service Tax, Bengaluru gave a detailed overview of the GST, the structure of the GST regime and the road map ahead for all stakeholders.
DP Nagendra Kumar, principal additional director general, DGCEI, Bengaluru, explained the various provisions of the Model GST Law and the implementation of the new GST law.
Both the speakers have actively been associated in several committees constituted for drafting model GST law. The workshop was conducted on an interactive basis where various questions of the participants were answered and clarifications were provided.

The workshop was attended by the officials of the Central Excise & Service Tax, Customs, Commercial Taxes, Mangaluru, representatives of major companies, MRPL, NMPT, MSEZ, banks, postal services, major importers, major exporters, RAC Members, members of Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, Mangalore Bar Association, Kanara Chambers of Commerce & Industry, Custom House Brokers Association and other stakeholders.
