Mangalore, Dec 22: The landmark Kadri Park here will soon have a skating rink, a compound, better lighting arrangement, a children’s park and an improved jogging track, if things go as planned.

Deputy Director of Horticulture C.J. Nagaraj told The Hindu that these works would be completed in six months.

Mangalore Electricity Supply Company had offered Rs. 12 lakh for the Rs. 15-lakh skating rink.

Efforts were on to find sponsors for the rest of the funds required for it. The 25-metre wide and 60-metre long skating rink would come up near the children’s park, he said.

Senior Assistant Director of Horticulture (State sector) N. Somaiah said the work on the rink would start next week.

He said private and public institutions would sponsor Rs. 35 lakh in addition to the sponsorship for the skating rink.

The department had Rs. 10 lakh allotted for the park’s development. Thus, a Rs. 60-lakh plan was ready to spruce up the park.

According to Mr. Somaiah, the improvement plan would take care of many of the complaints frequently aired by the people using the park. It would have a compound to keep away unauthorised elements, particularly at night.

On complaints that the jogging track was uneven, Mr. Somaiah said that a smooth track would be laid. Efforts were on to provide better lighting.

Some people agreed that the lawn at the park was being maintained well. They wanted a walkway around the lawn.

At present, the lawn area is enclosed. Mr. Somaiah said that the park would be developed in consultation with some senior citizens.
