Mangalore, Dec 24: The first autonomous results of semester – I Oct – Nov 2007 of St Aloysius College (Autonomous), of the city were announced here recently. In all a total of 916 students appeared for the first semester examination. Out of which 668 have passed with an overall percentage of 72.93, informed prof A M Narahari, registrar (evaluation) of the college in a press release.
The list of toppers in the various segments is as follows BA segment are 1. Anu Varghese 2. Deepali Mallya M 2. Meera Jacob 3. Blessy Alphonse Denny. In BSW segment 1. Severine Cutinha 2. Aishwarya K 3. Nidhi B N. In B’Com are 1. Chaitra P 2. Henette Quadros 3. Devika Sabhahita. In BBM segment 1. Karishma S David 1. Shabnam Lilly D’ Souza 2. Anolia Theresa Rebello 3. Mary Lincy M.P. In B Sc segment 1. Danica Glenda Pinto 2. Roopashree B 3. Marina Cutinho. While in BCA segment the toppers are 1. Alvera Marilda Rodrigues 2. Clarissa Rosario 3. Flona D’Souza.
Some of the highlights of the college’s autonomous system are enumerated below:
The degree courses re-structured – curriculum revised by updating the syllabus to suit the needs of society & industry and reformation of the evaluation system with continuous assessments & end-semester examination systems.
The continuous assessment with 30% weight age given and end semester examinations with 70% weight age. (For PG courses continuous assessment with 50 % weight age and end semester-50% weight age)
The continuous assessments having three components – (i) internal examination (ii) assignments / seminars / surprise tests and (iii) class participation.
The credit based system followed with integrated foundation courses and also extra-curricular & co-curricular activities.
The examination system fully computerized. Comprehensive software developed by staff led by Mahesh. The computerization would include entry of marks, tabulation and the declaration of results and printing of marks cards. Thus this enable announcement of the results within 10 to 12 days of examination.
Provisions made for facilities like photocopies of answer sheets and revaluation.
For maintenance of transparency & objectivity, question papers would be set by external examiners and valued internally. PG courses would have double valuation. External observers appointed for end semester examinations.
Plans are afoot to start five new PG programmes from the next academic year.
Further the release informs that the dream of St.Aloysius to become autonomous has been realized with the UGC, government of Karnataka and Mangalore university conferring autonomous status with effect from the academic year 2007-08.
