Mangalore, Dec 28: 'There is a close watch on the recent undesirable developments in the region like Special Economic Zone (SEZ); with the advent of SEZ the district is moving from bad to worse. Many things were promised by 'the giant forces' but none of them are fulfilled till today,' said Celine Aranha, social activist.

She was addressing the gathering at the agitation meet organized to oppose the setting up of SEZ and the other similar projects. The protest was staged in front of Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) at Lalbagh here on Friday December 28.

'Though the officials of SEZ have said that they will offer best packages of rehabilitation to the displaced, the extent to which their promise is reliable is uncertain. The setting up of SEZ and Petroleum, Chemicals, Petrochemicals Investment Region (PCPIR) will pose definite turbulations as the region will be thrown open to foreginers,' said Aranha, urging people not to cooperate with SEZ officials.

'Industrialisation must be encouraged so as to bring in development, but it must also be ensured that industrialisation is complementary to the environemnt of the region. The society has learnt a great lesson from the Bhopal disaster. Citizens must have the foresight to see things much in advance so as to avert future disasters,' said D R Kamat, industrialist.

'Development of the region is everyone's wish, but the region is not ready to embrace developments that affect the lives of thousands adversely. The people of the district call themselves that they are a 'very advanced-race,' but they are not so. Moreover they are led by influential forces. SEZ doesn't take the region to the acme, rather it leads the region to utter disrtruction,' Hanumantha Kamat, president of Nagarika Hita Rakshna Vedike.

Madhukar Amin, president of Krishi Bhumi Horatagarara Samiti also spoke on the occasion.

Kateel Dinesh Pai and others were present on the occasion.

It’s good to see so many of our renowned activists like Ms Celine Aranha and Mr. Hanumantha Kamath protesting against the proposed SEZ in our District. The best packages that are being offered will never compensate the real loss and the rehabilitation process will be as usual not meet even the minimum requirements.

The localites will also not really be encouraged and all major jobs will be given to outsiders and only the lowest rungs offered to locals. In order to really encourage Agriculture , the long term plan should involve Women empowerment, child nutrition and home nutrition. Emphasis should be on all around investment in developing infrastructure like railheads, roads, power, warehouses, processing , grading, packing and post harvest technology and other such allied activities.

The authorities say only a small part is Agricultural land and the major portion to be taken over is wasteland , but their words need to be truly verified and people have lost faith in their verbal assurances which are soon forgotten once the project gets under way.

Promotion of SEZ’s at the expense of fertile land or even precious forest land will ring the end of all Agricultural and natural activities and eventually lead to utter chaos and destruction.
