Mangalore, Dec 28: 'There is a close watch on the recent undesirable developments in the region like Special Economic Zone (SEZ); with the advent of SEZ the district is moving from bad to worse. Many things were promised by 'the giant forces' but none of them are fulfilled till today,' said Celine Aranha, social activist.
She was addressing the gathering at the agitation meet organized to oppose the setting up of SEZ and the other similar projects. The protest was staged in front of Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) at Lalbagh here on Friday December 28.
'Though the officials of SEZ have said that they will offer best packages of rehabilitation to the displaced, the extent to which their promise is reliable is uncertain. The setting up of SEZ and Petroleum, Chemicals, Petrochemicals Investment Region (PCPIR) will pose definite turbulations as the region will be thrown open to foreginers,' said Aranha, urging people not to cooperate with SEZ officials.
'Industrialisation must be encouraged so as to bring in development, but it must also be ensured that industrialisation is complementary to the environemnt of the region. The society has learnt a great lesson from the Bhopal disaster. Citizens must have the foresight to see things much in advance so as to avert future disasters,' said D R Kamat, industrialist.
'Development of the region is everyone's wish, but the region is not ready to embrace developments that affect the lives of thousands adversely. The people of the district call themselves that they are a 'very advanced-race,' but they are not so. Moreover they are led by influential forces. SEZ doesn't take the region to the acme, rather it leads the region to utter disrtruction,' Hanumantha Kamat, president of Nagarika Hita Rakshna Vedike.
Madhukar Amin, president of Krishi Bhumi Horatagarara Samiti also spoke on the occasion.
Kateel Dinesh Pai and others were present on the occasion.
