Karkala: 'People Lack Interest in Agricultural Sector'

Daijiworld Media Network – Karkala (RD)

Karkala, Dec 31: The district agriculturists' convention of Udupi district Bharathiya Kissan Sangh was held at Sri Bahubali auditorium, located near Dhanashale on Sunday December 30.

Ananthakrishna, chairman of Karnataka Bank, in his inaugural address, said that agriculture contributed 50 per cent of the national exchequer at the time of India’s independence.  However, of late, 20 per cent of share of agriculture has been already taken over by service sector owing to several reasons.

It seems people that lack interest in agriculture, owing to rise in cost of farming and slash in prices of agricultural products. Agriculture sector would emerge profitable only if the farmers sell their agricultural produce in the open market, avoiding the middlemen besides shunning the western products and make optimum use of resources available at their disposal.  The peasants' organizations have to strive in this regard, he added.

Sri Bhattaraka Swamiji of Karkala Jain Math graced the occasion.

Dr Upendra Shenoy, chief of child welfare division of Hindu Service Foundation, Bangalore was the chief guest present at the occasion.  H Vithal Shetty, district president of Bharatiya Kissan Sangh, B K Ramesh, state chief secretary, Vasudev Shanbagh, district treasurer, district secretary, Nitte Navinchandra Jain, taluk vice-president and others were present, on the occasion.

Satyanarayan Udupa, secretary of Bharathiya Kissan Sangh welcomed the gathering.  Balakrishna Rattady, vice-president delivered the introductory note.  Srinivas Hande, district chief secretary presented the report.  Umanath Ranade compered the programme.  Padmanabha Shetty, Karkala taluk president proposed vote of thanks.

This is most unfortunately the fact not only in Karkala but almost 90 % of our Agricultural zones. Can any farmer name a crop and be assured of a fixed price for atleast the current season ? Probably not . This is one of the reasons for the shift and farmer suicides. The land use for Agriculture is undergoing a drastic reduction and use of land for non agriculture purpose is on the increase . The service and industry sector is getting priority.SEZ's are not helping either.

The average land holding in India was about 2 Hectares in 1976 -77, 1.8 hectares in 1980-81 and presently it is just between 0.1 to 0.2 Ha. Every year about 2 million landless labour is being added to the Indian population. The share of Agriculture in the national income has declined from 50 % to 22 %. Development in Indian Agriculture unfortunately cannot be done by collective means or by joint stock farming and the focus continues to be on the individual farmer who alone can achieve the seemingly impossible task.

The only way out is to increase the yield and productivity and to an extent be done by increasing the area under irrigation and water efficiency. Watershed programmes, precision farming , sustainable farming , organic farming , holistic approach etc , are only some of the options which can be but adopted in a very limited way. But the basic factor is the price of the crop and the farmer should atleast be able to get back the cost of the crop . This unfortunately is not happening .
