M'luru: Ecological sensitivity leads to economy of permanance: Prof Mark Lindsley

Media Release

Mangalore, Nov 5: Addressing a strong gathering of young social workers on November 5 at School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya here, professor Mark Lindsley from the United States, a renowned economist at the Harvad University gave a brief overview of the development of the world economy.

He said,"During time of affluence and less inequality, we tend to destroy much of the natural resources and that is what has happened with the great American dream. Unfortunately, Indians are trying to copy the Americans in terms of economic resources, wastage or over utilization of energy. The great renowned Ganghian Economist Dr Kumarappa in his Book 'The Economy of Permamnce' talks about the free will of man which should be used wisely to co-ordinate human resources to strengthen the natural economy, but using it foolishly can disturb the natural ecoconomy and destroy man himself."

He also spoke of the real community which is the community in which we interact with people face to face and the imagined community which is bigger and in which we do not really know the members, but we belong to it. When the imagined community is attacked, it becomes a real community and we have a strong sense of belonging and need to do something to keep it at that. Ecological sensitiveness needs to become a topic of our real community wherein adequate production with decent distribution for the Welfare of human kind with its ecologically sound material culture brings about ecological sustainability.

"But at the end the crux of the matter is not about talking the talk but about walking the walk and each individual must see the importance of how one can play a role in ecological sustainability," he added.
