Mangalore, Jan 10: Construction of high-rise buildings in the city should be ceased if the beauty of the region has to be enhanced and maintained, UNESCO former assistant director general G Vishwanath Rao has opined.

Delivering a talk on 'Mission Mangalore' at Town Hall here on Wednesday January 9, he stressed on the need for turning the city in to a 'jewel' by maintaining its greenery and cleanliness. He cited the example of Ira village and entreated the citizens to follow on similar lines.

He further suggested several measures to realise the dream of a clean and green city like better traffic system, enhanced rain-water harvesting, provding 24-hour electricity supply, cleaning up the beaches etc.

He emphasized the need to eradicate corruption in order to take the country in the path of development and called upon the citizens to live with integrity and justice. People should realize the value of higher education if the country has to progress, he added.

The programme was jointly organized by State Bank of India and Mangalore City Corporation.

Among those present were SBI assistant general manager C M Thalloor, MCC joint commisioner Ajit Kumar Hegde and Citizens' Forum coordinator Vidya Dinker.

    Development and maintaining present environment- we need to have one only. Both not possible. Former gives employment and raises purchasing power and latter gives clean air and stagnation
