No respite from queues, chaos; ATMs grapple with cash shortage

New Delhi, Nov 18 (PTI): Chaotic scenes could still be seen at banks and ATMs as people queued up for hours to get valid currency notes to meet their daily expenses, even as the government yesterday lowered the exchange limit of defunct bills and eased certain restrictions on withdrawal norms.

On the 9th day of demonetisation, bank branches and cash vending machines are still struggling to manage huge rush. Adding to the woes, most ATMs were either dysfunctional or running out of cash. It is taking people around 1-2 hours to withdraw Rs 2,500, the upper limit set by the government.

Bankers are saying it may take another 10-15 days to get all ATMs re-calibrated to dispense high denomination notes of Rs 500/2,000. Mirroring state of affairs in the country, branches and ATMs at seat of power like Parliament House, Finance Ministry and other ministries also have long queues for the withdrawal.

However, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley yesterday said the rush at bank branches has come down significantly and that there is absolutely no panic. With the government and RBI struggling to ease cash availability, the small businesses – from vegetable vendors to dhabas and small kirana stores – that use cash as mode of transaction were the worst hit.

People faced inconvenience in purchasing milk, vegetables, medicines as they did not have adequate small currency notes. At various hospitals across the country, patients and their family members are facing inconvenience in buying medicines, food and availing transportation.

A bulk of daily labourers were rendered jobless as construction and other activities came to a standstill in the wake of cement, sand and other supplies not coming in.Truckers too were reportedly stranded on highways as drivers ran out of valid currency notes, affecting movement of goods in several parts of the country.

To ease inconvenience to the people, government yesterday allowed witdrawals up to Rs 2.5 lakh for weddings and up to Rs 50,000 for farmers but more than halved the limit of exchange of defunct notes to Rs 2,000.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on November 8 surprised citizens by announcing demonetisation of 500 and 1,000 rupee notes and since then large number of seemingly unending queues before banks and post offices are seen in order to exchange these currencies.

Select bank branches across metro cities have already started applying indelible ink on the right hand index finger of people who are exchanging notes.

It may be a good decision if the secrecy is kept and well planned and public is not troubled. But now it is a known fact that big tycoons like AMBANI ADANI and others and even BJP party members hinted about the decision in advance to take care of their excess money. It made the commoners and poor people like dogs on the roads waiting day and night for money for their basic needs let alone for marriage and other emergencies like hospital requiorements. There is no sympathy from the government for the dead because this only as thye shrugged off saying that such sacrifice bound to happen in the long run interest of the country. If the black money uncoverd is more than the thousands of crores of rupees lost on daily basis due to the total business came to standstill is somewhat acceptable and there is no sign as it leaked to the big people already. Only coming two months will tell the real situation of India.

Come out of the well and think logically, if you where ambani or adani

Any transaction over the counter you need a PAN card to deposit anything over 50000..

Well, in the interest of the nation's need to eradicate black money, rollback is not exactly what the people who are lining up day-after-day will demand, but minimum is properly working ATMs and sufficient cash available at banks.

Secrecy maintained is an excuse - to get the banks ensure their ATMs are in proper working condition should have least made mandatory. The government could have sent the new notes to outlets in advance with an undisclosed date of releasing them.

A very unprofessional manner of handling the affairs.

Govt should open Banks many more banks also in every village Post offices, Panchayat offices, LIC Offices and recruit lakhs of staff to explain / operate banking account & ATM's.
Bank account should be made mandatory to Every adult Indian and link it to aadhar.
Shops & Estt license should insist on having wireless card swiping machine to collect payments from walk in customers. All these steps are overdue now in lieu of demonetization.
Till these facilities are in place, there will not be any respite from queues and chaos at ATM's and Banks.
But after these implementations, GST will also work in India.

    Ristomji,

Whose property is an ATM? The Bank's or the government's? Even if it is government's, didn't NDA have sufficient time to get them repaired? Especially when they were contemplating introduction of demonitisation since six months?

Modi is riding high on all old policies of UPA, is using Adhaar, a system so much criticised by him and also using UPA's ATMs ??

Chaiwala/Baniya will remain same, PMship is fit just for bureaucrats.

What did congress done continuously done for two terms. It's not there responsibility to rectify ATM's which is out of service. Did they ever think of common person. Ofcourse things which is useful can be continued by other government.
You mean Lord Yama which is known in hinduism should not be continued in christanity as Azrael..again should not be continued in Islam as Malak-al-Maut. Name may be differs..work and things remain the same. Why should bjp change the policy of congress if helpful to nation. Should continue. All should work under same sky..cannot go for another planet.

Oh ! Modiji told you that Congress was informed during their two terms that he is going to introduce overnight (on 08.11.16) the culling of 500/1000 currency bills ? You did not reply to me whether the ATMs are the property of ruling government, or that of pertinent bank.

However, what do Christianity/Islam or Ramrajya have to do with money ? Do all those line up, display symbols to say that they are from a certain community ?
