Mangalore, Jan 16: Population is the biggest asset, the country has. It becomes really useful when population undergoes training. But big number of schools in India lack proper infrastructure. This is one of the biggest problems resulted in the failure of attracting the children into school, said Newman Fernandes, principal of St Xavier College, Goa.

Speaking at the concluding ceremony of All India Christian University Federation (AICUF) state level convention held at Fatima Retreat Centre on Tuesday, January 15, he said that there is need for the government to strengthen the infrastructure and government accepted it. 11th Five Year Plan is termed for education. The government has realized that education is a strong tool for the economic development of the nation, he added.

One has to think about inclusive growth; how to reach the un-reached section, so that the country can surge ahead. Initiative is needed in this regard, he opined.

Innovation is the tool which helps to come out with new ideas. Actually schools help for that. The knowledge society will progress when it comes out with new ideas. Unfortunately, the schools here failed to bring out new ideas, because they supply questions and provide readymade answers for the questions, he expressed concern.

Fr Henry Jerome, national advisor of AICUF said that convention will not change the society. But conviction can. These conventions will help to choose a right perception, he opined.

Meanwhile, certificates were distributed to the participants. Anita Pinto conducted the certificate distribution ceremony.

Manoj Lewis, state animator of AICUF, Fr Charles Lasrado, Bangalore region adviser, Fr Francis D’Almeida, state adviser and Jessica, state president were present on the dais.

Evelyn Sneha welcomed the gathering. Christebel D’Souza proposed vote of thanks. Caroline Menezes compered the programme.

A total of 120 delegates from 22 colleges from the cities like Mangalore, Bangalore, Mysore, Harihar, Udupi, Puttur, participated in this 3 days convention. It was decided at the convention to force the government, in order to assure quality based education to all which matches with the developed society.

When many countries of the world are going into negative population growth, India's population is rising at the rate of nearly two percent per year. This means by the year 2035 India's population will possibly exceed the population of China. We totally agree that the brain power and the knowledge power must rise proportionately in order to enable India to march with the progress of the world. You need a whole village to raise a child into a proper educational setting, and therefore each and everyone of us have a responsibility to extend whatever help that we can render for the progress of literacy in our country.

Side by side, health and living environment must also change with clean water and clean air in order to produce a healthy nation with intellectual growth and prosperity. It is our prayer that India must gain all the strength and support from each and every citizen, far and near, to make our country a role model so that our intellectual manpower will prove to be a major contributor of human resource for the welfare of this fast moving and fast changing "small world - a beautiful world".
