Mangalore, Feb 17: It was a weekend bash for the young people. The near-empty Sunday roads coupled with a thrill for speed had two youths competing against each other throwing all caution to the winds. The police couldn't stop, but a ghastly accident did.

They began gallivanting with their white Honda Accord and orange Mitsubishi Lancer bearing the registration numbers KA 01 MB 2332 and KA 20 MG 2131 at 5 pm on Sunday February 17. Little did they know that their irresponsible road sense would result in an accident involving five other vehicles.

The two drivers lost control of their vehicles and rammed in to a Maruti Alto owned by a certain Dharmendra Shetty, Maruti Wagon R owned by a certain Bhagirathamma, Toyota Innova, two auto rickshaws which were parked on the road side near Ambedkar Circle here.

Two auto rickshaw drivers were injured in the chain accident. Fortunately, no life was lost despite the drivers crossing speed limits. However, the vehicles were heavily damaged.

While the Mitsubishi Lancer was taken to Bunder police station, the other car could not be moved immediately owing to damage.

Bhagirathamma, owner of Maruti Wagon R which has been heavily damaged, purchased the car just a few days ago. The car has not even been registered yet.

According to the traffic police, both the accused drivers have been speeding with their cars from many days. Moreover, their number plates too had discrepancies and were not in accordance with the law. Both drivers have been creating panic among other commuters for sometime now, the police said.

The accused should be jailed Or be made to serve the public.Rich or influential, whatever they may be, If they are so interested in drag racing, let them show it on track. They know they will defeated badly as they themselves know their true potential.Hence try their hands on the streets filled with people endangering innocent public lives. These drivers permanently should be banned from driving

Both the offending drivers should be penalised by cancelling their driving licenses with immediate effect. This is the right time to for the cops to teach a leson to such irresponsible youths regarding road manners.Even the parents of these youths should be taken to task.

It is high time the traffic police enforced the law with equality. Many a time it is seen that the rash driver gets away just because he drives a bigger car and can intimidate or even buy off a traffic enforcer. At the same time, the officers are unduly rude and harsh to drivers of smaller vehicles who obviuosly would not have "connections" or "friends in high places" or the money to buy their way out.

Rich or poor, a traffic offender has to be penalised duly in a non-corrupt and non-humiliating manner, which is the way all civilised countries handle their traffic woes. Thankfully, no lives were lost or incapicitated as a result of the rash driving of these youngsters in the past few days.

While the traffic police mentions that they noticed these vehicles being driven rashly over the last few days, why did they not speak up/act earlier do they have to wait for accidents to occur or lives to be destroyed?
