NEET shocker: Female candidate says asked to remove innerwear

Kannur (Kerala), May 7 (IANS): In a shocking incident, a female candidate who appeared at a NEET centre here on Sunday claimed she had to remove her innerwear before sitting for the entrance test. Other women candidates too faced a harrowing experience due to a strict dress code in force.

The anguished candidate told media persons after attempting the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) -- conducted for admission to undergraduate medical courses in government and private medical colleges in the country -- that she was asked by the examination centre's officials to remove her innerwear.

"My daughter went inside the centre, only to return later and hand me her top innerwear," said her mother.

Another candidate, who was wearing a pair of jeans, was asked to remove a pocket as well as metal buttons from the clothing.

Her father told IANS: "She was wearing jeans. Since it had pockets and metal buttons, they needed to be removed. I went to a shop about three km away from the exam centre and bought a new dress for her after getting the shop opened."

Those living in the vicinity of the school where the NEET centre was set up came forward to help candidates by giving them suitable clothes to wear.

"I know of a Muslim family which gave six tops to candidates to wear. Even more shocking was the fact that authorities did not permit anyone to wear full-sleeved top. Those wearing such sleeves had to cut it to make it short-sleeved," said another harried parent.

"The ordeal is over but it's debatable how many female candidates would have been able to write the exam properly after they were subjected to so much humiliation. I will write to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to seek action against those responsible," said state Mahila Congress President Bindhu Krishna.

The Centre Board of Secondary Education organised NEET 2017 on Sunday in as many as 104 cities across the country, for which more than 11 lakh aspirants had registered.

People comment mindlessly without verifying facts just based on some hearsay. People should first read up the dress code published for NEET and anyone found violating the same has been strictly dealt with all across the country. Instead of applauding the measures taken, some unverifiable incidents are blown up unnecessarily

CBSE has enforced strict dress code so that no malpractices dont take place.
chits and hifi gadets get hidden/ disguised in the candidates for cheating/ copying.
Uniform dress code will benefit all honest candidates.
Dress code was told much in advance for the exam- no full sleeves, no ornaments, no shoes, etc.
The girl must have worn a full sleeve shirt as inner ware under a sleeveless dress as they usually do in this part of the country .
asking to follow the dress code is not wrong

India is on forward gear but many Indians are on reverse gear ..so In many places India is getting torn because of these 2 opposite forces. There are so many challenges the modern world is throwing at us at such a rapid pace,,our officials and people with extreme traditional mindset cannot keep up with that pace and keep on messing up every now and then....

It's a good move, but they should have informed the candidates in advance. There must have been some confusion since NEET is being administered for the first time. I'm sure in future it should be ok. NEET is a good move by the government to prevent corruption in seat allotment. If India has to progress then only the eligible candidates need to get the seats in Medical Engineering and other fields.

Dress code was informed very much in advance-
no full sleeves, no ornaments, no metallic items etc.
Still many came to write exam in total ignorance.
Strictness is required to avoid malpractice in exams

What strict dress code to write an exam???. It's exam hall which is a public place, ladies will not dress as if they do in their own houses. Moreover, they are appearing for career oriented exam who are very matured and responsible will definitely dress modestly. This is not less than harassment and high handedness
