Udupi: Bride without Prejudice - Brahmin Men Wed State Home Women

Udupi, Apr 1: It was a defining moment in the lives of four women of the State Home when they tied the nuptial knot with Brahmin bridegrooms at Stree Seva Niketan here on Monday March 31.
While Shashikala wedded Shankaranarayana, assistant priest of Pavanje temple, Chanda was wedded to Rajesh, conductor of a local bus. Kavya tied the knot with Vinayaka M Hegde, a peasant from Uttara Kannada district while Kaveri H A married Srinivas Murthy.
Altogether seven couples were wedded here during 2007–08 including Muslim women. The marriages are solemnized under the direction of the district-level officers and expenses are borne by the department and donors.
The couples get Rs 20,000 from the government of which Rs 5,000 was used for marriage expenses and the rest is kept as deposit for three years. In the case of SC/ST couples, the amount given is Rs 25,000.
