Mangalore, Apr 24: Heavy whirlwinds usually found in Coastal Karnataka regions, lashed across the city during the late evening hours of Wednesday April 23, causing extensive damage to life and property in several places here.

These sudden gushing whirlwinds was followed by rain and heavy lightening with flashes of thunder. This began around 9.30 pm on Wednesday, as a result of which electricity supply in and around the city was also disrupted.

Also due to the heavy winds and rainfall three persons were reportedly injured at the Balmatta Mission Compound when a coconut tree shook badly and collapsed on a house nearby. The injured persons have been identified as Devaputra Kundar, his wife Prafulla and son Nithin. All of whom have been admitted to a hospital close by. Their house too was severely damaged in the bargain.

Meanwhile traffic was badly affected on National Highway 17 due to falling of trees on roadways. Huge line-up of vehicles were found at Sankolige in Someshwar Uchil since road was blocked here for hours owing to the collapse of a tree over the highway. Locals pitched in and struggled hard to clear the road till the late hours of the night. It took them several hours in-fact to clear the roads as the tree was very huge indeed.

Roads between Kulur and Kavoor also remained closed for few hours, since a tree had fallen at Panjimogru owing to the deadly whirlwinds. It looks like the MESCOM authorities have got their hands full with electric polls and trees having collapsed in many parts of Mangalore City.
