Niti Aayog vice-chairman economist Arvind Panagariya resigns

Mumbai, Aug 1 (Deccan Chronicle): Arvind Panagariya, who was first vice-chairman of Niti Aayog, has resigned from his post, reports said on Tuesday. Panagariya is an Indian American economist and before he joined Niti Aayog he was professor of economics at Columbia University.

His last day in office would be August 31. Panagariya has said that he will return to academia. This could be termed as yet another high-profile exit from a crucial high profile government institution.

RBI governor Raghuram Rajan who is also an economist walked out of doors of central bank after months of speculation about him and his 'patchy' relationship with the NDA government.

Panagariya has also served as chief economist at the Asian Development Bank. In 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that his government will scrap decades old Planning Commission and bring in its place a think tank that later came to be known as Niti Aayog.

After the Niti came into existence, Panagariya found himself as front runner for the vice-chairman's post. Like Planning Commission, Prime Minister is the chairman of Niti Aayog.

Panagariya is a writer as well. He has written or edited as many as ten books. However, the reason for his resignation was not known. It may be noted that Panagariya as Niti chairman had threw his weight behind each and every policy move of Narendra Modi government. He had also supported the highly-publicised demonetisation termed as anti-black money crackdown.

Arvind Panagariya, a trade economist who teaches at Columbia University, has been appointed by Narendra Modi as the Vice-Chairman of National Institution for Transformation of India (NITI) Aayog. The NITI Aayog is the replacement of the Planning Commission, and Arvind Panagariya is replacing Montek Singh Ahluwalia. Montek Singh Ahluwalia had a better deal than Panagariya does by at least one count- he headed a body that did not have an embarrassing name. Panagariya, on the other hand will be in-charge of an awkwardly titled aayog (commission) and an “Institution” (sansthan). Yes, the name doesn’t matter, but as you are about to find out, Arvind Panagaria is a Grammar-Nazi in more than one way.
Here are the 4 reasons why as vice-chairman of the NITI Aayog, he will harm and deform India.
1.Arvind Panagariya is an apologist for the Gujarat anti-Muslim Violence. He argued that they should not be called a pogrom.
2.Arvind Panagariya thinks that there isn’t much malnutrition in India. He was proved wrong by several researchers. He never bothered to reply.
3.Arvind Panagariya does not even understand the programmes and rights he seeks to destroy.
4.He wants to dismantle public health, social security, and education programmes.
Moreover, during his two-and-half-years at NITI Aayog, the economist was in absolute agreement with the government on most policy-economic issues, including the controversial demonetisation plan. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say NITI Aayog often took up the role of government's mouthpiece to defend its various policy initiatives rather than acting as a corrective force like it was initially meant to do.
As Panagariya bids farewell to his office, his track record won't impress many.Economist leaves behind a legacy that won't impress many. Demonetisation is one such mess.
