Mangalore, May 7: The students of P A Engineering College located in the outskirts of the city staged protest against the college administration demanding better management of college buses on Wednesday May 7.
As reported earlier in these columns, a bus belonging to this college overturned just about 200 meters away from the college on Tuesday May 7, while carrying students to the college from the city. Though there was no official confirmation, sources claimed that more than 25 students had sustained injuries in the accident. The eyewitnesses had stated that bus had toppled thrice before turning turtle. The mishap is said to have occurred owing to brake failure. Therefore, the students staged protest against the college management and demanded better maintenance of the buses.
The students also demanded the management to form students’ council in the college and withdraw old buses from service. The students alleged that, when accidents occur, the families of the students are at the receiving end and not the college management. ‘Therefore the management should take this mishap seriously,’ they demanded.
The driver of the bus had earlier informed the college authorities when the tyre got punctured at Yekkur. But the authorities neglected the words of the driver and told him to drive the bus to the college within the stipulated time or else be prepared to lose the job. Having no other way out, driver had continued driving, students blamed.
Reports reaching Daijiworld office from the spot said that students started the protest again in the afternoon when the management disagreed to meet their demands. The students have made it very clear that they will not withdraw their protest, till the management agrees with them.
