Rs 200 notes may be in use by Deepavali

New Delhi, Aug 3 (DHNS): The wait for Rs 200 currency notes could get a little longer.

Contrary to reports that the notes could hit the market by the end of this month, sources said it may actually come only during Deepavali.

The finance ministry had given a nod for their printing only in late June or early July. The printing could take over a month, according to sources familiar with the development. They said after the notes are printed, it would take another month or so for the circulation to set in.

Reports had earlier said that the Rs 200 notes could hit the market by August. According to informed sources, the currency notes could come in orange or a mix of orange and yellow. The bills will be smaller than the Rs 500 notes currently being circulated.

New bills, new size

They said the notes could take sometime to hit the ATMs as they will have to be recalibrated to fit the new bills that will be of a different size.

“The new currency will go through multiple security checks before being circulated. The whole exercise may take around three more months,” a source said.
