Mangalore, May 21: It was a rare visual treat for nature lovers when three whales were spotted a nautical mile off Panambur beach here on Tuesday. The local Coast Guard officials, who received information, immediately rushed to the area to confirm the sighting.
Deputy Inspector-General of Coast Guard N.V. Narasimha spotted the whales that were spouting and directed his men to clear the beach.
Deputy Commandant, Coast Guard, N.M. Rathod, told The Hindu that sighting of whales off Karnataka coast is indeed rare.
"Whales are normally spotted off the Gulf of Mannar and the Bay of Bengal," he said and added there was no immediate known history of these mammals being spotted in the local waters.
Mr. Rathod said the whales were probably in transit to their normal habitats when they were spotted by the locals. Mr. Rathod said the people were asked to stay off the waters as a precautionary measure.
