Dubai: Girish Karnad's Classic Play 'Hayavadana' on Jun 20

Dubai, Jun 10: Renowned playwright Girish Karnad’s Popular Kannada play “Hayavadana” directed by Prakash Rao Payyar will be staged by Dhwani Pratishthana on June 20, 2008, Friday at 5.30pm.at Indian Consulate Auditorium, Dubai.

Prominent poet, playwright, folklorist, film director in Kannada and the founder Vice chancellor of Kannada University- Hampi, Dr.Chandrashekar Kambara will be chief guest of the award presenting ceremony. Kambara has been conferred with many prestigious awards including Padma Shri by Government of India, Kabir Samman, Kalidas Samman, and Pampa award. He is also nominated as a member of legislative Council Karnataka State.

Noted poet, Honorary secretary of Kannada sahityaparisht Javagarhalli Shivshankar will be guest of honour. Noted Director, Producer, Actor Sreenivas Kappanna will be honoured with “Dhwani Sriranga Ranga Prashati-2008”.

“Hayavadana” is one of the Girish Karnad’s most performed plays. It is the story of Kapila and Devadatta- is based on a tale from Somadeva’s “Vetalapnchavimshika”, but also draws on Thomas Mann’s reworking of the tale in “The Transposed Heads”. Interwoven into the main plot is the story of ‘Hayavadana’- a horse- headed man whose quest for wholeness underscores the play’s exploration of identity and reality.

“Hayavadana” has been translated and staged not only in the Indian languages; it has been staged across the world in different languages since last four decades. Now it is UAE Kannadiga’s turn to enjoy the play.

This play is directed by Prakash Rao Payyar -playwright, poet and stage director who has the experience of directing more than twenty five plays in Kannada.
