Mangalore: Family Attempts Suicide - Father Dies, Wife, Daughter Serious

Mangalore, Jun 13: In a shocking incident of attempted mass suicide that came to light on Friday June 13 morning, a scientist from Bangalore died by consuming poison, while his wife and daughter are in a serious condition and fighting for their lives.
The scientist named Dr Vijay Singh (50), a Rajasthani settled in Bangalore H S R Lay Out, had booked a room in the city-based Hindustan Lodge on K S Rao Road, four days ago. Dr Singh had come to the city along with his lecturer-wife Savitha (40), student-daughter Shruthi (16) and son Sivamshu (14), studying in SSLC. The family had been visiting various temples and beaches in and around the city since the day they came here.
For reasons not yet very clear, Dr Vijay Singh laced a drink with a poisonous substance, supposedly methyl, at night on Thursday and asked the family members to consume it, besides drinking it himself. The boy, who is in a shocked and confused state, is not in a position to give more details except that the drink caused death and he escaped death by feigning to be consuming the drink and spilling the entire content. Therefore, the police have so far, not been able to elicit much information from the boy than that the doctor was heavily indebted to the tune of about Rs 40 lac.
The Bunder police have registered a case. Meanwhile Savitha and her daughter have been admitted to the intensive care unit of the government hospital here where efforts are being made o revive them.
