Bantwal, Jun 19: In a unique co-incidence, a girl who had been separated from her mother and sister 14 years ago, met them again, all because of a feature film. The credit for uniting the family goes to a feature film titled 'Akrandana' dealing with the problem of dowry prevalent among Muslims, brought out by the Dakshina Kannada district unit of Jaymiyyatul Falah.
Jainabi, last daughter of Moidin Bakrakody in Kinnigoly, had been given in marriage to truck driver Mohammed Rafiq from Moodigere, 26 years ago. He had already been married thrice, and abandoned Jainabi after fathering two girls through her. Jainabi chose to go back to her parental but her uncle Sulaiman drove away Jainabi and younger daughter Zarina, forcing here elder daughter Asiya to grow up at Sulaiman's house away from her mother and sister.
Destitute Jainabi, who had reached Javagal, a holy Muslim pilgrimage centre, was spotted by Abubakker from Vittal Okkettoor. He brought the mother-daughter duo to Vittal and provided them shelter. They later shifted to Kanatadka where Yousuf Haji and Darkas Abdul Khader supported them. An organization in Kanatadka, witnessing the plight of the mother who along with her daughter was rolling beedies and doing coolie work, provided them with a small house to live. Zarina, now 19, has completed education till the eighth standard.
Asia, faced with heavy household work and domestic violence at her uncle's house, went to live in the house of Mohammed Ali, a distant relative. She was later married to truck driver Hussain Shariff from Tamil Nadu. She now has three sons and a daughter. Asia who recently saw a CD of the feature film 'Akrandana' that has showcased the plight of Muslim women, recognised the faces of her mother and sister. After some efforts, she could locate her mother and sister with help from Jamiyyatul Falah, Dakshina Kannada unit. She was assisted in her efforts, by Jamiyyatul Falah leaders Haji Mohammed Hanif Golthamajalu, Razack Master Anantadi and Rashid Vittal.
Asiya has offered to take her mother and sister along with her to her place, but they are not interested. They want to continue to stay at Kanatadka. Haji G Mohammed Hanif has promised to repair the house where Jainabi resides through the district unit of Jamiyyatul Falah.
