Udupi, Jun 23: Atul Rao, the prime accused in the circumstances that led to the mystery death of Padmapriya, wife of MLA Raghupaty Bhat was brought from an undisclosed location in Mangalore to Manipal police station, on Monday June 23. The police have registered cases of kidnap and conspiracy to abet suicide under Indian Penal Code 306 and 365. He would be held in lock-up at Manipal police station till he is presented before the court here on Tuesday June 24 morning.
The activists of the District Congress Committee (DCC) staged a protest in front of the Taluk Panchayat office, here on Monday June 23, urging the state administration to hand over Padmapriya's mystery death case to the CBI and demanded a brain mapping of Ragupathi Bhat, former Karkala MLA Sunil Kumar and Atul Rao
Congress leader Pramod Madhwaraj, addressing the agitating party men said that if MLA Raghupaty Bhat cannot manage his home affairs, how he will manage the affairs of his constituency?
Its essential to hold CBI probe on Padmapriya’s case, since she was directly involved in business as well as personal affairs of both her husband Raghupaty Bhat and his close friend Atul Rao. Moreover, investigations are highly recommended to ascertain why there was a delay of nearly 24 hours by Karnataka police both in breaking open into her apartment and then to bring her mortal remains back to the town.
The state police department is acting like puppets in the hands of state home minister Dr V S Acharya who too has very often misled the people. His irresponsible statements have played a major role in making this case so suspicious, he alleged.
“We do not trust the investigations undertaken by Karnataka police on Padmapriya’s mysterious death,” said Pramod Madhwaraj. Protests will be held in every village and wards across the district, if the demand to hand over the case to CBI is not met at the earliest, he cautioned.
Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) spokesman M G Hegde, addressing the protesters, said that he will have no trust even after probing the case by CBI, because the work of destroying all the proofs related to Padmapriya’s case are systematically in progress at the behest of investigations by state and local police.
Raghupaty Bhat has made his wife scapegoat to save the dignity of his family while Dr V S Acharya has tried to cover up the case by curtailing the police powers. If police takes the lead from the data of mobile used by Padmapriya, the truth behind her death will be exposed, he added.
Congress leaders Divakar Kundar, Vithal Shetty, Narasimhamurthy, M A Gafoor, Bhaskar Rao Kidiyoor, Murali Shetty, Habib, Janardhan Bhandarkar, Harish Kini and others were present during the protest.
