Mangaluru: Contradiction – govt-sponsored book says Tipu Sultan was anti-Christian

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Nov 7: Kannada and culture department of the state has sponsored a book which seems to be contradicting the views of the Congress government of Karnataka. This book reportedly says that Tipu forcibly took Christians of coastal district into captivity and made them accept Islam.

The book in question is 'Mangaluru Darshana', which is published by Mangaluru Urban Development Authority (MUDA), that gives the extensive historical details of the coastal region. The book states that the Christians of the present Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district were purportedly chained and taken to Srirangapatna from Mangaluru.

According to the reference on page 199 of volume I of the book, many among the captured died on their way to Srirangapatna and those who were able to make the treacherous trip were compelled to accept Islam as their religion. These people were later called as 'Ahmadiyas'.

In addition, the book also portrays Tipu as the destroyer of 27 churches, including Milagres and Rosario. He also allegedly destroyed 23 to 40 churches in Mysuru. However, the book does not uphold the opinions of writers and historians stating that Tipu was indeed anti-Christian.

This three-volume book was released in 2016 by the then minister for urban development Vinay Kumar Sorake.

As per Nazeer, former MUDA commissioner and coordinator of the book, the references in the book do not reflect the views of the government. Those are the perspective expressed by various writers and historians.

Hyder Ali or Tippu Sulthan was a great person because he fought against the British. However he destroyed many churches and temples. There was good in him as he fought ferrociously against the British. But at the same he attacked worship places of other religions. SO e have to take a balance view of the situation. Personally I am an admirer of Tippu Sulthan for his bravery and the fight he gave to teh britishers.

Today, medieval India is seen as a place of eternal religious conflict. But that view is more due to modern-day politics than the actual events of history.
In India, history is hardly ever neutral. Even bare facts and dates are often bones of contention. With the current atmosphere of tension and controversy on the role of Muslims in Indian society, some of the most contentious arguments over Indian history are those that seek to reevaluate the legacy of Islamic states in the subcontinent, largely at the behest of Hindu nationalists.
Hindu and Christian communities were targeted by Tipu but, as historian Kate Brittlebank points out, “this was not a religious policy but one of chastisement”. The communities he targeted were seen as disloyal to the Mysore state. Tipu also, in fact, acted against Muslim communities such as the Mahdevis, who would support the British and find employment as horsemen in the East India Company’s armies. Even as Tipu attacked Hindus and Christians from outside Mysore, as Susan Bayly says, he “was careful to foster close ritual and political relations with Hindus and even Christians with his own domain, provided these groups posed no threat to this authority”.
With the rise of Hindutva in Karnataka in the 1990s, Tipu’s image was sought to be changed from a secular freedom fighter to Muslim tyrant. However, this incident stuck out like a sore thumb. The event – where “Hindu” Marathas attacked a temple protected by a “Muslim” Tipu – confused people who would have liked to see medieval Karnataka as a mirror of modern India, with Hindu-Muslim communal sentiment being a major axis of politics.
Of course, the past is a foreign country. There is no doubt that Tipu committed, what would be by modern standards, atrocities and war crimes. But so did the Marathas, in Sringeri. While Tipu’s violence was par for the course during his age, the mistake many modern-day readers do is to backread a modern communal motive to his actions.

In Kannada there is one saying" Oorigondu Daari aadare Kona Nige innondu Daari"

Majority of Hindus are against Tippu Jayathi celebration on tax payers money.
Majority of Christians are against Tippu Jayathi celebration on tax payers money.
Majority of Muslims are against Tippu Jayathi celebration on tax payers money (since it is against their religion to do vyakti pooje).
Un necessarily creating tention in the society, many people in the past lost their life during Tippu Jayanthi.
But Siddu and congress most arrogant and egoistic. Government must respect majority sentiment. They can celebrate in Congress Office at their own cost.

There were thousands of Indians employed by British Army for the purpose of wars within India. There were Hindus, Muslims and Christians joined British Army as it was employment opportunity for their livelihood.
Wars within India always fought between rulers of different kingdoms within India. Thus, Indians were fighting Indians.

It was like, IPL - Irfan Pathan was bowling and Yusuf Pathan was batting in opposite teams.

GSB surnames like Nayak, Prabhu, Pai, Kamath, etc. that Catholics hold today are their pre-conversion original surnames which many of them have still retained.

Christian or Hindus..But now our emotions should be buried with the pages of history ,at the same time government must not try to glorify such persons with questionable track record by making them heroes.. Countries and societies around the world have had brutal leaders...but let them be sealed in the history.. otherwise generations will be caught up in endless fight...and specially in India , political parties are using history to justify present day violence to gain votes which is shameful and must be rejected by all of us ...

    hi
what we are reviewing today is history and and at that time the law and order was the as per the ruler.

what we need to understand is rulers in their power built or destroyed , there was no democracy .

come today, we have democracy, we have to know our history, it teaches us a lot , tells us a lot and it is majorly because of history like this we have unity in diversity which was built centuries ago.

we need to clearly understand politics today uses any possible thing to get political mileage, who can undo history , but you can sure plan a future,
tipu was a muslim ruler he was bad , has a muslim country barred indians, and christians into their space, how many of us make a living in places like gulf countries

Unlike the British who have come to rule India and they made One India from the fighting petty, petty, Kings.

The British have even surveyed all the forest land and laid Mile Stones which are still evident in our time.

    TIPPU KILLED WHOLE HUMANITY.
He imposed Jizya Tax to Hindus and Christians.

Tippu destroyed Hindu temples and Churches.

There is no compulsion in religion and Tippu forcibly converted Christians, Jews and Hindus to Islam.

Even Godse Jayanthi is observed by a particular group, not by the Govt. Christians supported the British is a baseless fabricated allegation. Konkani speaking Christians in Mangalore had migrated from Goa over 150 years before the reign of Tipu. A few of them owned lands while a vast majority worked as agricultural labourers. Christians never held top bureaucratic positions in the region since they were deemed as newcomers and not familiar with local administration. Towns and villages were administered by the Tulu speaking communities. There’s no question of Christians doing menial jobs for their livelihood supporting the British. The British army then comprised of Indian soldiers, commonly called as sepoys, from all communities including Muslims.

If you visit Madhoor Ganapati Temple (Kasargod), then you can see SWORD mark on some places inside temple...So, I think whatever published in Govt sponsored book regarding destroying of Churches is True or near to reality....And interestingly, Muslim Population is more in Kasargod and Mallapuram due to Tippu's forced conversion...

This fact is known to everyone, still one doesnt understand why govt wants to go ahead with Tippu Jayanti. If its for vote bank then there are many other distinguished Muslims much better than Tippu. All elected Congress representatives must boycott this forced celebration and ask the govt to think of some other alternative

What the book states is true. What will the govt do now?? rewrite history?? Also this wont look good upon the christian politicians in the govt who support ''tipu was a hero'' claim. Either you are a person who would stomp of the memories of your ancestors for your political gain or you are ignoramus fool.
