Mangalore, Jun 25: The city civic authority embarked on a demolition drive against illegal pavement vendors and petty shops located near State Bank bus stand here, at 10 am on Tuesday, June 24.
Workers, accompanied by policemen, equipped with earthmovers and trucks arrived fully prepared to clear the pavement and streets of vegetables and other sundry items that were displayed for sale. It was all dumped into waiting trucks along with the petty shops that are a hindrance to traffic and pedestrians alike.
Although the civic administration has been undertaking such surprise drives frequently, they are back in business at the same place, the very next day. Though the vegetable vendors from the outskirts of city have been engaged in the trade since many decades, the city authorities have neither provided them an alternate site to carry out their trade nor accommodated them anywhere in the nearby municipal market.
The women vendors represented by their union have been urging the local civic body to meet their demands for a long time now.
