Beltangady, Jul 1: In a heart-wrenching incident that occured at Puduvettu near Dharmasthala on Monday June 30 afternoon, a woman fed poison to her two young children before consuming it herself and ending her life. One of the children however, has survived but is fighting for life as of now.

Neelamma alias Vasanti (25), wife of Mohan Gowda from Beejadadi House in Sameda Kalape in Puduvettu and her son Prashant (2) lost their lives in the tragedy. Kavita, five-year-old daughter of Mohan Gowda, whose condition is serious, is being treated at the government Wenlock hospital in the city.

The neighbourers say that there was no apparent misunderstanding in the family and the couple never fought. The family members are tight-lipped about the possible causes that prompted her to resorting to this extreme step. The family comprises of Mohan Gowda, his mother, Neelamma and her two children.

Yamuna, mother-in-law of  Neelamma had gone to the fields for planting the seedlings while Mohan Gowda had taken the cattle out for grazing. Both of them claimed, that they found all the three lying in the verandah when they came back at about 1 pm and could not wake  them up. The girl who was still in her senses, said that her mother had consumed poison and fed herself and her brother with it.

Mohan who was working as a jeep driver in the past, ekes out a living from agriculture now. The couple are married for the last six years. Kavita attends anganwadi.

Even though close ones say that the husband and wife had good relationship and that there were no problems in the family, some sources said excessive drinking on the part of Mohan Gowda might be the reason for the tragedy. People however, did not forget to add that Mohan seemed to have given up liquor since the last three months and was caring for the family well.

Circle inspector Gangi Reddy, sub-inspector of police Sainath Rane, assistant sub-inspector Chandrashekharaiah etc., visited the spot. A case has been registered at Beltangady police station.
