Udupi, Jul 3: Atul appears to be going through a bad patch of late. Whatever he does or does not do, hits the headlines. The protests being staged on the roads by various organisations and individuals in Padmapriya death case, enetered the Udupi sub-jail where Atul, remanded to judicial custody till July 6, is currently lodged.
Atul, who was in and out of several hospitals since the last couple of weeks, had finally been housed at the Udupi sub-jail on Tuesday, July 1 after being discharged from the KMC Hospital Manipal. On the morning of Wednesday July 2, some undertrials came out of their cells and staged a protest, demanding that Atul be shifted out of the jail.
The jail officials immediately visited the spot and informed the agitators that they would refer this demand to the judicial magistrate and abide by whatever decision he takes. If they continue with their protests, they would have to face the legal consequences, they warned. It is learnt that peace returned in the jail after this warning.
This small sub-jail with seven rooms, has been home to about 50 undertrials. Tahsildar V B Fernandes who was approached for details on the reported assault on Atul, said that nothing of the kind had ever happened. There were reports that the other jail inmates were agitated over the fact that Atul received VIP treatment and that he was allowed to have food cooked at his home and that they had snatched his food and assaulted him.
The jail officials are learnt to have approached the Udupi chief civil judge on the evening of Wednesday July 2, for permission to shift him to Mangalore jail. Orders may be passed on the issue today.
It is gathered, that Atul's wife has complained to the court saying that Atul was not properly cared for by the hospitals and that he was not given necessary treatments. Alleging that Atul's life is at risk, she has asked for shifting him to a jail elsewhere.
