Mangaluru, Dec 27: Plans are afoot to build an alternative road that connects New Mangalore Port with an investment of one thousand crore rupees. The proposed road will pass through Nethravati river bank.
The new road is projected to ease traffic on city roads like Car Street, Mannagudde, Bolar, Ladyhill etc as thousands of vehicles transporting fish from the fishing dock at Bunder area of the city move through this route. The restriction placed on entry of heavy vehicles into the city during the morning hours can also be handled with the building of this new road. This road is also thought to reduce traffic in city areas.
During the BJP-JD(S) coalition government in the state, a plan to build a hanging bridge from Sultan Battery to Thannirbavi had been announced. Once the current project takes shape, this hanging bridge project will be shelved as a new, permanent bridge, will come in its place. The bridge will be so laid that it does not restrict movement of small and big ships. The journeys between places like Bunder to New Mangalore Port and Nethravati, Gurpur River and beach will provide picturesque scenery, opening up opportunity for these areas to become tourist attractions.
A private consultancy has been given the responsibility of preparing an estate for the proposed road, and the construction of this road will transform the very look of the city, said MLA, J R Lobo.
