Mumbai Police’s hashtag drive raises awareness

Mumbai, Jan 22 (Mumbai Mirror): The official, verified Twitter handle of the Mumbai Police has launched a unique campaign to make citizens aware of various crimes such as identity theft, endangering the life or personal safety of others, obscene acts in public, and the manufacture, sale or purchase of banned drugs.

What is unique about the campaign is that the police have used stills from Bollywood films to demystify the law, using analogies to demonstrate how it operates differently in real life than the way it is often depicted in reel life, i.e. in the movies. The police also hope to deter would-be criminals by outlining exactly which sections of the law they would be booked under if they committed these crimes.

Unifying the tweets are the common hashtags #IfItWasntForReel and #IfItWas- NotForReel, with which the Mumbai Police handle @MumbaiPolice is tagging all the tweets.

Sources in Mumbai Police told Mirrorthat the idea behind the hashtag campaign is to tell citizens, especially youngsters, how real life is different from reel life. “If you do a particular thing in real life, which is shown in the movies, it can land you in trouble,” a Mumbai Police official said.

“We are telling people how stalking, which is shown in movies as ‘following’ a girl, can land you in trouble under Section 294 of IPC (Obscene Acts and Songs, Stalking). Similarly, making a fake social media account or opening a bank account in someone else’s name can land you in big trouble,” the police official said.

And what better way to drive home this message than Bollywood?
