Mangalore, Aug 13: Two labourers died when a retaining wall collapsed at Monkey Stand New Road on Wednesday August 13.The deceased have been identified as Ashraf (19) and Shareef (25), both from West Bengal. They were engaged in the construction of a building adjacent to the retaining wall, which collapsed.

Sources informed that a crack was detected in the retaining wall well before the incident occurred. The labourers were told not to venture near the retaining wall, as its possible collapse was visualized because of incessant rains. In addition, the flood waters had entered many houses near the retaining wall. But the labourers overlooked the instructions of the contractor and stayed close to the retaining wall overnight.

The incident took place at about 1.30 am on Wednesday August 13. Fire fighters and the local corporator Premanand Shetty visited the spot. But the security personnel denied the possibility of any person getting trapped inside the collapsed retaining wall. But when people were pressed to search for Ashraf and Shareef who were missing from morning, the fatal tragedy came to light in the afternoon.

DySP D Dharmaiah, Pandeshwar inspector Timmaiah and sub inspector Ramakrishna rushed to the spot and gathered information about the incident.

Tragic incident. More disheartening is how can rescue people just assume that nobody is struck under the wall when they arrived at night. Had they been pro-active 2 valuable lives could have been saved. Please use resources such as sniffing dogs and thermal device to find life under debris. This may happen to one of your family member, let us use technology and respect life.
