Mangalore: Fishermen Pray for a Good Season Pics by Dayananda Kukkaje
MANGALORE, Aug 17: Hundreds of fishermen offered mass prayer by the Arabian Sea at Tannirbhavi here on Saturday for calm seas and a rich catch.
Raja Sandhyanath Swamiji was taken in a procession by the fishermen from the Sri Bhrahma Bobbaraya temple to Sulthan Batheri. From there, he was ferried across the Gurupur estuary to the Tannirbhavi beach. There, the swamiji led them in a prayer before offering prasada to the sea. The fishermen dispersed after collecting the prasada in the form of turmeric powder. The fishing season this year began on August 10.
Till then trawlers and purse-seine boats were banned from fishing. The fishing holiday is given to ensure the breeding of fish. During the holiday, smaller and traditional boats are allowed to fish. However, such boats have now been withdrawn.
