Mangalore, Aug 26: N Vinaya Hegde, Chairman of Nitte Education Trust today inaugurated the Mangalore SEZ website www.mangaloresez.com and said “Mangalore is gods own place as far as SEZ is concerned.  Mangalore has no future unless Mangaloreans are going to become SEZ-friendly”.

SEZ will give an impetus to the economic activity of this region and would also create tremendous job opportunities.  At present every child of our district is going to the Middle East or Mumbai or Bangalore in search of greener pastures on completing education.  But once SEZ takes off and if it becomes local-friendly it will provide an opportunity for our children to stay back here to take care of their parents without sacrificing their careers, he pointed out.

He added that though we all value our land the sacrifice of one person for the overall development of the region is the need of the hour or else the status quo will continue and Mangalore will remain stagnant as far as development is concerned.   He, however, called upon the officials of Mangalore SEZ to assure the displaced people that rehabilitation and resettlement is done on a time bound basis without delay so as to mitigate their suffering. “A large number of local people should be included to provide long term training because blue-collar workers in Dakshina Kannada are now having difficulty in getting jobs due to lack of training”, Mr Hegde added.

He further said that the enlightened and intelligent people of Dakshina Kannada should understand the concept of SEZ.  We are talking about growth in China, Singapore and Middle East which is happening largely because of SEZs. If we are not exposing ourselves for the changes, our country will not change.

He called upon the local people to make their own decisions and termed it as unfortunate attempts by some people with vested interests to make issues out of nothing.  The displaced people should get a fair price for their lands and this fair price is the price that prevailed before the SEZ project came up.  SEZ is a god given gift to the people of this district, he said.

Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada M Maheshwara Rao, who presided over the function, said that the Mangalore SEZ website would go a long way in dispelling all half truths that are in circulation and would give a correct picture to the people about details pertaining to Mangalore SEZ.

I S N Prasad, Managing Director and CEO of Mangalore SEZ, talked about the importance of Mangalore SEZ and the impetus it would provide for the economic activity in this region. Mangalore, being a maritime port is the ideal place for setting up a SEZ, he stated.

He also gave a brief account of the contents of the website including why Mangalore is specifically chosen for setting up the special economic zone.  He assured that the company will take every possible step to keep the emissions at much lower level than what is prescribed by the various environment agencies.

The website, he said, will be updated regularly to accommodate information as and when it occurs.  General information on the website is available for the public in English and Kannada languages.

A G Pai, Executive Director of Mangalore SEZ welcomed the gathering.

Every thing is fine but one thing is not fine and will not be fine until all dislocated people are properly compensated and suitably rehabilitated.

Mr Salian's thinking seems to have gone haywire looking or rather reading his comments!International vested interests! HMM-one for the dictionary really! Weak elements in the KCCI? can he substantiate this please? And crumbs were meant only for crows right?

Linking the commissioning of a SEZ to the congestion in a particular area of the city is hilarious to say the least! There are so many such places in the city- Does Mr Salian have any vested interest in the place concerned? How can one generalise the woes of the city and expect them to be solved by a SEZ? Really progressive thinking with a balance is the need of the hour!

Mr. Vinay Hegde chaired CATF idealised on SEZ and few local industrialists (who where tired of KIADB's mismanagement of Industrial Estates)through KCCI made a proposal on a coastal SEZ hoping that local entrepreneurs will get an opportunity to compete globally.

Petrochemical Processing and production was not a part of that proposal till they got the letter of consent for SEZ. ONGC(backed by international vested interests) hijacked the Mangalore SEZ project taking advantage of some weak elements in KCCI! no one dared question this.

Now these weak elements in the hope of getting some crumbs from MSEZ are on a full scale Bhajan of MSEZ. If Mr. Vinay Hegede really believes in some one sacrificing for the sake of nation, he should ask people of car street area whether they are willing to shift the temples there to ease traffic congestion in the interest of Mangalore's development.

If their answer is no, then Dear Mr. Hegde please don't expect the farmers to sacrifice their land for the sake of few vested interests who have covered their greed under the words of "employment" and "growth". MSEZ will be fortified enclave, without any control of or connection to the local authorities.

Any infrastructure development will be within the SEZ , Mangaloreans please dont day dream about cities woes being cleared by MSEZ. A Petrochemical SEZ is a disaster imposed on Tulunadu and it's people

SEZ is a good idea. But who are implimenting it ?. The present corrupt government officials/contractors etc. When we see the condition of our roads I pity the people who impliment it. You tar the road and the next monsoon you have pitfalls all over the road.

Well the contractor has got his amount after lining the pockets of corrupt government officials. To tell you the truth in my 40 years of adult life I still have to see an upright person.Once the right price is offered everybody blinks. We know what is meant by SEZ and its benefits. But you need to have a non corrupt group to oversee the implimentation.

I do not take the side of the farmers. I know that there are a lot of greedy farmers who will agitate till they get the right price for their land. And there are people who are holding the power of attorney for the land and they will take part in the agitation so as to hike the price and make a good killing.

I fully concur with your views. This is a clear ploy to grab fertile agricultural land at peanut prices and convert this beautiful port city into a pollution filled concrete jungle. Regarding the poor infrastructure facilities here the less spoken the better. Let the Govt complete the projects on hand first before venturing into multi projects and goofing up the entire thing.

See the condition of the road widenining project (Suratkal-BC Road) which is hardly progressing!! What about potable water supply? What about good severage system? What about electric supply? what about environment pollution? What about mass transportation? In short disaster awaiting for this beautiful & peaceful city!!!

Corporate mafias new avatar is SEZs by grabbing thousand and lakhs of acres of land in the name of SEZs. Today democracy is in danger because of political and corporate greed. All the democratic countries acting for the welfare of corporate sector only. The time has come to think again about our democracy - what it stood for - SEZs? Here Gandhigiri not going to work. We need another Subhash Chandrabose? We need a second freedom struggle from our own rulers.

The SEZ (Special Economic Zones) policy, which provides little clarity on the impact of generous tax holidays and myriad concessions on the economy, may also come to a grinding halt, but nobody is complaining because every corporate group is rushing off to grab chunks of valuable real estate to set up SEZs, exactly like they chased power projects in the past."

Mangalore is already called "Rome of the East". Now it is "God's Own Place for SEZ". So Mangaloreans at least be proud of these melodious titles ... I hope many more will come soon like... "Heavenly place for PCPIR" ...

Why was the website launched in hotel Manjarun? Why not in the place where the project is coming up? People who are losing land also should have been invited for the event. God's own place for whom? Those who assembled inside Manjarun or also for those who are losing precious land inherited from their ancestors? Where is the land kept ready to rehabilitated for the displaced? Any answers for these simple questions?

SEZ should come up in Mangalore. There is no doubt that a few people in Mangalore and nearby places are opposing this project for their own interest. They are misguiding the people about this project. If Mangalore has to develop, MSEZ should come up.

Thank you N Vinaya Hegde for your wonderful speach on MSEZ. ISN Prasad also clarified this God gifted project to Dakshina Kannada previously through Daijiword. Couple of narrow minded fake leaders, few Daijiworld readers & some other parties misguiding the people of DK instead of supporting the project. They would like their names in headlines just to brainstorm the local farmers.

I would like to request the public to listen to the Good Governance of the present Government in the Centre & State, Corporate leaders like N.Vinaya Hedge, Prasad, AG Pai as well as DCDK M.Maheswara Rao.

Some of the Daijiworld readers comments on old stories and Mangalore city development like road, electricty, water, garbage collection etc. These basic problems will be resolved in phased manner by this MSEZ project. I wish & pray to God to bless DK to accomplish His gifted project. Thank you.

Mr. Prasad efforts to educate and making awareness of MZES is a good step. As Mr. Hegde said, our samrty people settling towards europe/USA etc, and missing the touch of beauty of our motherland. Once the Manglaore city grow in basic necessity i.e. electricity / infracture facilities / garbage system etc,all will look back for more investment and services. The authorities must take local people in confidence and should listen their problems and must solve. Otherwise therewill be setback. Best wishes for MZES.

Our farmers should not sacrifice thier land to SEZ. When MRPL project came they told they employ locals. But they employed others. When we put our applications MRPL did not even call for interview, they were not even ready to train us. We had the required BE degree as well as 1st class. At least let our farmer brothers do agriculture and fill their stomach.
