Mangaluru: Four lives lost due to heavy rains in twin districts

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, May 30: Unexpectedly heavy downpour coupled with lightning and strong wind which was experienced in coastal Karnataka between Monday night and Tuesday evening has left behind a trail of deaths and devastation. It will take weeks for the administration to take stock of the situation and undertake remedial measures, as it was under prepared for handling a situation, the size of which came as a surprise.

A large number of houses have been damaged due to lightning, rain and wind while many houses have been surrounded by water turning them into virtual islands, making life hell for the inhabitants.

Mohini (60) was buried alive after a mound of earth caved in on the rear side of her home at Udayanagara near KPT here. In another case, Mukta Bai (80) from Kodialbail in the city lost her life after falling into water. Mukta, who was sick and bed-ridden, was compelled to make an attempt to escape when rainwater entered her house and water level kept on increasing. When water level reached up to the height of her cot, she tried to get down, but lost her balance and drowned.

On the day of the reopening of the school after summer vacation, a girl student returning from school was washed away by water overflowing in a stream. Another student who was also getting washed away was rescued by the locals on Tuesday May 29. In another incident which happened on the same day in Karkala taluk, a member of Bailoor gram panchayat (GP) died due to lightning.

Nidhi (9), a fourth standard student of Ganapati School at Padubidri, was washed away by flood water when she was crossing a minor bridge over Patla stream near her home. On account of incessant train, water over overflowing in the stream and excess water was gushing through the road above. The two sisters who were together returning from school were pulled away by the force of water instantly. The locals who jumped to the rescue of the sisters could save Nisha but Nidhi drowned and went out of sight within a fraction of a second.

Padubidri police visited the spot and undertook operation to find out the girl from the stream with the help of experts but failed. Nidhi was the daughter of Umesh Acharya and Asha couple from Patla. Nisha is a sixth standard student.

Lightning struck a member of Bailoor FP in Karkala taluk in the early hours of Tuesday May 29. The GP member was deep asleep at her home when lightning caused her instant death. The deceased happened to be Sheela Nalike (35). Her husband, Bhaskar Panara, who was sleeping by the side of Sheela, survived although he too felt shocks of lightning in his hand.

A report about this incident was filed in the town police station, Karkala.

As the meteorogical department has predicted more rains during the next two days, official machinery in both the districts have been kept in high alert and security forces have also been kept in readiness to face any eventuality.

    Dear Rakesh - Pune

I don't seem to understand the link you are trying to develop here with regards to the Vatican and the rains in Mangalore and its subsequent after effects. You seem to be carried away or possibly coerced to talk demeaning comments of a particular community and group. The same seems to be the case with certain Media Houses who seem to have targeted a community that is peace loving and contributed immensely towards the development of our nation especially by rendering social service, affordable health care and education. Mangalore too has many institutions which are run by Christians providing such service and that's done without any discrimination of religion, economic status, caste, creed or as you seem to be talking about any political affiliation.

The issue here isn't of BJP or Congress or a matter of fact of any religion - we have called for the disaster for ourselves. We have been blatantly constructing towers and walls over agricultural land and natural pools and lakes which in turn leads to a situation where free flowing water is blocked.

Yesterday's situation was similar to Mumbai where incessant rain accompanied by high tides meant that water on its own couldn't flow out into the sea/river. Just to let you know Mangalore faces a similar issue most of our storm water drains cannot be made deeper on the pretext of accommodating more water flow which would result in a back flow from the rivers which in turn would cause a disaster of higher proportions.

So hold on to your political predictions as natural disasters do not come knocking on your door and decide to give it a skip if you support a particular party or community. You can see for yourself communities in the US and across Europe suffer from floods and its related devastation very frequently, does that meant that they are a less developed nation - obviously not. Be it Modi or Gandhi neither would have been able to prevent or mitigate the effects of a natural calamity.

    Cheers

We know this time the rainfall was heavy and unexpected.

But when our local administration become proactive? They have not learnt from earlier experiences.

Earlier we have witnessed the slit in drainage system is main cause for artificial floods. Slit has to be removed in summer and not wait till it starts raining.

I have seen in Udupi slit being removed but stacked besides road and not transported out. All the slit removed has gone back to drainage system after it started raining. Poor supervision and direction is the reason for these kind of blunders. People concerned has to be penalised heavily.

    Dear Rakesh - Pune,

Your presence in Pune seems to have made you obliviously to ground reality in our good old Mangalore. Just to reiterate a few points to which need your urgent attention and may be to a few buddies of yours who are extremely keen on politicizing the current situation:

    1. The 3 mentioned ex MLA's ie Lobo, Bava & Rai - have worked selflessly towards development of Mangalore city. As a matter of fact, I don't think any of us based in Mangalore can complain about the seemingly less pot holed main roads that are present in the city - your demand to put them behind bars is totally baseless.
    2. Drainage in the city as pending issue for which a 2nd loan was secured from the ADB to improve the aging infrastructure to improve the drains in the city. It is up to the current elected MLA's to do the needful in implementing the projects for which funds have already been secured.
    3. Water logging is more or less a man made phenomenon - We as individuals have been extremely greedy in constructing buildings and fancy houses that we care a little about the free flow of water. Water needs to flow freely and obvious low areas and depressions in land will cause serious water logging for example Padil Railway crossing. It didn't help that our storm drains were made ineffective due to high tide during the downpour.
    4. Mangalore being a hilly terrain many of our roads are built lower than the houses, hence the water run off goes straight there - the concerned authority at fault is the corporation who did not make adequate arrangements of water run off to be linked to storm drains while building the roads.
    5. We have to admit here the amount of rainfall received at one stretch is definitely the highest in a long time and instead of pointing fingers at each other and accusing either party or the corporation, we should stand side by side and support and help all those in need is providing medicines and food and possibly help in evacuating those who are stranded.

    Cheers

    Thanks for your commonsense.

We 120 Crore Hindustanis believe in Modi Rule and hope that within 10-15 years we will be a developed country, if..if Modi rules another 10-15 Years. However due to Vatican impact on Green Party everything has been Politicized for that last 4 years. These uneducated leaders from Green Party is taking India backwards instead of going forward. What is the caliber of Raul Vincy ? has he successfully completed 10th std examination ? Whats is the caliber of Sonia Maino ? I like your commonsense Similarly We all need to be practical and support Modi (irrespective of Religion) and contribute to Indian Development.
