Bantwal, Jun 1: The police personnel from town and rural police stations here fired at people trying to commit robbery and steal cows on Thursday May 31.
Beltangady police station received a call from a person that four to five persons armed with lethal weapons were moving around menacingly in a red Maruti Swift car. The caller also said that when the people shouted, those in the car escaped in their car towards Guruvayanakere.
The car was signalled to stop at Guruvayanakere police check-post but the car without stopping, sped towards B C Road. On getting information over wireless about the fact that the car was coming towards them, police sub-inspectors of the town and rural stations of Bantwal set up check-post near Manihalla and began checking the vehicles. The police got further information that the car failed to stop even at Punjalkatte check-post.
Police constable, Adarsh, and home guard, Bhaskar, who were at the Madhwa check point of rural police station asked the car to stop but the car moved ahead towards B C Road. After conveying information that the car in question was being chased by the police of Bantwal, a department vehicles was kept across the road to block movement of the red car at Manihalla Junction. The car was signalled to stop from a considerable distance but those inside the car came at high speed, and tried to attack the police personnel with rod and sword. At this, Bantwal town station police sub-inspector, Chandrashekhar, fired at the car with his pump action weapon. Prasanna, sub-inspector of rural station here fired at the car with his pistol.
The car then suddenly turned towards Navoor in a hurry. During this effort, it got stuck in the drain. Immediately, two persons seated in the back ran away. The police personnel then surrounded the car, caught hold of three persons seated inside, and checked the vehicle. It was found that two swords, a rod, chilly powder, monkey cap and ropes were stored inside the car. On being questioned, those inside the car said that they had planned to stop vehicles on the road and rob the people and also if possible, to steal cows from any house on the way.
The arrested trio has been identified as Mohammed Muksin (23) from Suratkal, who faces over 14 cases, Mohammed Irshad (29) from Kuppepadav Mangaluru and Saddam Maripalla, who faces murder and murder attempt cases in the rural police station here. A case under different sections of Indian Penal Code was lodged in rural police station here.
Probationary IPS officer, Akshay M Hake, rural station sub-inspector, Prasanna, town sub-inspector, Chandrashekhar and other personnel took part in this operation, said Dakshina Kannada district superintendent of police, Ravikanthe Gowda, who asserted that people indulging in illegal activities will be dealt with sternly without any lenience.
