Mangalore, Sep 16: A delegation of citizens, led by eminent film personality Mahesh Bhat, accompanied by Dr Abraham Mathai, vice chairman of Maharashtra Minorities Commission and general secretary of All India Christian Council, is scheduled to visit the city on a fact-finding mission in the city on Tuesday September 16. Prominent among the others who are scheduled to accompany him during the visit are, Joseph Dias, general secretary of the Catholic Secular Forum (CSF), the Mumbai-based national community NGO and representatives of secular society. The objective of the delegation is to get a first-hand report of the violence against Christians, which saw 18 churches and worship centres attacked and almost a hundred citizens injured, including nuns, priests, pastors and church-workers.
The delegation also plans to meet the bishop of Mangalore, Aloysius Paul D'souza and Christian leaders, who have been at a receiving end of the attacks, and express solidarity of secular Indians, to the persecuted Christians in the state. The delegation will address a press conference later in the day, and a report of the delegation's visit will be presented to the President of India, Prime Minister, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, union home minister, governor of the state, MPs etc., in addition to international human rights organizations.
It may be recalled, that the delegation had visited Orissa after the anti-Christian violence there and had later met the President, after which some normalcy returned to the state. It is clear, that a similar pattern is being followed in Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh states, a development which is a cause for concern for the citizens of the country.
