Mangaluru: Hopes of including Tulu in eighth schedule rekindled

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jun 2: The 12 BJP legislators who were recently elected from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts have evinced interest in unitedly fighting for winning a slot for Tulu language in the eighth schedule of Indian Constitution. They have made up their mind to win rightful place for their language in the constitution.

Tulu has been waiting for this honour since the last seven decades, and the people feel that this is the right time for the elected representatives to put their weight behind this demand and make this happen as BJP is in power at the centre now.

It is learnt that these 12 legislators had recently met to discuss important demands and problems concerning the twin-districts. During these discussions, sources said that the issue of bringing Tulu under the ambit of eighth schedule of the constitution also was discussed.

With the recent achievement of revision of Tulu dictionary, recording of Paddanas and other cultural heritage things and others and also their translation to other languages, there has been an added thrust for the language's chance of being included in the eighth schedule. MP, Nalin Kumar Kateel, says that already this issue has been taken up in the Lok Sabha and that this proposal is before home minister, Rajnath Singh, now. He feels that the state government too has to bring pressure on the issue to make further progress.

The time now is ideal as BJP has registered tremendous victory in coastal Karnataka and this party currently is in office at the centre. The MLAs plan to meet Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, and place before him a forceful demand for giving official status to Tulu language by including it in the eighth schedule.

If this effort succeeds, the party leaders will get an achievement they can take credit of during Lok Sabha election campaign next year, thereby turning the tide again in the saffron party's favour. The delegation to be led to New Delhi is also proposed to have Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari, Dr D Veerendra Heggade, and Tulu Sahitya Academy president, A C Bhandary and other eminent personalities as its members.

Tulu Nadu should be a separate state. We will get control over our taxes and get direct funding from central government which otherwise has to go through bangalore. OLD South Canara District should have never been merged with mysore in 1956. We have always been separate culturally. As far as the demand for eight schedule is concerned Sri Veerendra, the Pattada Pergade of Dharmasthala has been raising this issue since 2009 and no central government has given assurance on this till now. Until All communities in Tulu Nadu don't unite and press for our political demands then these yeddyurappa, kumawaraswamy and siddaramaiah type bangalore politicians will take us for granted.

I support Tulunadu....But I fear if separate Tulunadu is formed at present scenario it will be ruled by Sanghi elements .... So whenever Tuluvas form separate regional Tulu political party against BJP and congress with significant presence with no communal color ..I will then support separate Tulunadu....If not minorities in Tulunadu will be under mercy of Sanghi elements who are more interested in Vedic Aryan glory rather than erstwhile Tuluvas inclusive culture...

Tuluvas are a people who primarily worship bhûtas and daivas. We were ruled by kings and chiefs who followed jain philosophy like Chowtas, Ajilas, Banga and Ballal and follow our own common law called Aliya kattu given by King Bhutala Pandya of Alupa dynasty. Only in recent years has this vedic thing crept into our system because of Brahmin influence. Tulu Nadu will not be ruled by Sanghi or Congi elements if we follow our native culture which is harmonious with nature and has no place for mindless violence . The recent growth of communalism in the region is only because people don't know their history and have been taken over by religious propaganda of all kinds.

An exemplary example of the Tuluva hospitality and generosity is their wholehearted acceptance of the Konkani speaking migrants who fled Goa in the 16th century as a result of Portuguese atrocities.

Sidhu had been always blowing his trumpet in the name of promoting Kannada without any consideration to Tulu and other languages in the state. His main objective was to confront the BJP and to prevent the Centre from imposing Hindi, which was actually introduced by Congress years ago. Now its time to give Tulu its due recognition before the matter goes out of hand.

While we are proud of our Tulu we need to go back to enjoy the wealth of our living together and understanding each other as one people irrespective of our religious beliefs. That was the rich unity in diversity we were enjoying and we need to celebrate it more than just inserting the language in the eighth schedule. Its heartening to listen to college and university students speak tulu so well and with pride. We are indeed proud of the beauty of tulu and also appreciate the beauty of multiple languages in the south but we are rich because we understand and respect each other as my fellow human beings. Thats the heritage we need to claim back. That's what we offer from the south coast to India and to the international community.

As long as tulunad state is not formed, we will continue to face injustice. Tulu nadu state should be formed and truly should be made the official language.

Right. You should add to that, and say Tulu is a beautiful language, like Konkani. Tulu kings ruled the Vijayanagara Kingdom in the 14th century before the Kannadigas came to dominate.
