Beltangady: Miscreants Strike Again - Window Shield of Idol in Murje Church Shattered
Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore (SP)
Beltangady, Sep 19: At a time when the district is struggling to return to normalcy, trouble mongers raised their ugly heads again, in the wee hours on Friday September 19. Motor bike-born vandals, who came to the St Xavier Church of Murje under Beltangady diocese near here, at about 2.30 am, threw stones and shattered the glass shields provided to the idol of Infant Jesus, located outside the church hall.
It is a paradox that Catholic and Hindu leaders had agreed for amicable settlement of the entire issue and issued a joint press statement that they will respect each other and will not cross the prescribed boundaries. But miscreants have proved that they are bent on creating misunderstanding between the two communities.
As there has been a jurisdictional confusion between two police stations over who has to provide security to the church, the police shirked from the responsibility of posting its men there, in spite of receiving instructions for the same. Members of the church committee were guarding the premises, when they heard the sound of the stone-pelting. Immediately they came out and switched on the light. It is said that the miscreants disappeared from the scene immediately. It is also gathered that the idol has not been damaged in the attack. The culprits could not be identified.
Based on a complaint filed by Fr Thomas Kanniagal of the church, the Venur police visited the place and conducted spot inspection. Sub-inspector of police Manju is investigating.
