Udupi, Sep 20: At last, the national highway authorities have woken up to the gravity of the situation and started repairing the badly damaged stretch of the national highway 17 in the district on Saturday September 20. The work was initiated in front of the sugar factory in Brahmavar on Saturday September 20.
The national highway stretches at Padubidri and between Kallianpur and Sastan have suffered the maximum damage. The locals have been urging the highway authorities to repair the road immediately. The authorities had not responded positively to the demands of the locals and therefore, the people of the district had decided to repair the road on their own through voluntary work from September 27 onwards, under the leadership of Heddari Ulisi Hotara Samiti.
The national highways department has since sanctioned a sum of Rs 2 crore for the repair of the highway, only after the locals repeatedly raised their voices against the despicable state of the road. Still, the sources have expressed the opinion that the work that has begun in Brahmavar, has not been up to the mark and that the present repairs may not withstand even a single rain. The work has been taken up just as eyewash, to pacify the people.
